Women's tennis team awaits NCAA tournament bid
Announcement will come today for No.17 Jayhawks

One week after winning the Eight Championships, the No. 17 Kansas women's tennis team, 19,6 is eagerly awaiting an invitation to the NCAA Championships, which will be announced today.
Kansas coach Chuck Merzbacher said that the team had been maintaining its regular practice schedule, even though a bid to the national tournament is not assured.
"We're just on edge, hoping to get in," he said.
Twenty teams are invited to the NCAA Championships, May 12-20 in Gainesville, Fla., with four of those being the top-ranked teams in each region. The other 16 spots will be filled by at-large bids, and that is what the Jawhaws are hoping to receive.

The Jayhawks may have improved their perception to the NCAA tournament selection committee after winning the conference tournament in a dominating fashion. They blanked Missouri 6-0, Colorado 5-0 and Oklahoma State 5-0.

Kansas also has one of the toughest schedules in the nation. All six of the Jayhawks losses have come to teams that are now ranked in the top 25.
So Merzbacher said that his team was assuming it would receive an invitation to the NCAs and was staying focused.
Even if the team does make it to Gainsville, he said it was not realistic for the Jayhawks to compete for a national championship.
But if the team does not receive a bid, sophomore Rebecca Jensen is expected to receive a bid as the No.15 singles player in the nation. Jensen and sophomore Nora Koves form the No.12 doubles pair and should also make the field.
The first five days of the NCAs will be the team competition, and the remaining four days will be for the singles and doubles titles.
The Kansas men's tennis team finished third in the conference with a 16-5 record. Senior Carlos Fleming had the lone shot on the队 of making the NCAA's top four players in each region will go, but when the Midwest rankings came out yesterday, Fleming was fifth.

He took over the women's program in November, two months after former Kansas mens' coach Scott Perelman abruptly left. For two months, Coach Michael Center was the coach of both teams.
Merbzacher said that Center did an amazing job of stabilizing the Kansas tennis situation, while both coaches put together good seasons.
