"The rain set everything back, and we are trying to get work done while it is dry." said Helsel, commenting on maintenance programs for graduation.
The flowers decorating campus for graduation came from a greenhouse for the first time in more than 15 years, according to Steve Heisel, associate director of construction, landscape and vehicles.
"We want the campus to look nice for the visitors." Helsel said.
Rain and unusually cold temperatures have put a damper on landscape work around campus. Since the ground thawed,
maintenance workers have been busy mowing, pruning, and planting in preparation for graduation activities.
Flowers, which are usually abundant on campus, are being grown in greenhouses this year so they will be in full bloom for the graduation crowd. Late frosts forced the growing of flowers indoors for the first time in more than 15 years, according to Helsel

"Many things need to be done." Helsel said, "The biggest problem has been the grass. The ground has to be dry to allow tractors to mow the grass, and Mother Nature has not been cooperating."
Nature has not been soaked when wet, it clumps up and doesn't cut well. Tractors can also
damage the muddy earth and leave ruts, according to Mike Ulrich who mows yards over the summer.
"We are struggling to get all the grass cut, but it seems that the weekends are the only time it's dry enough now." said Helsel
Large trucks with arms to lift workers up into trees allow maintenance workers to trim the trees and bushes on campus. Trees and bushes are also receiving a new layer of wood chips around their bases.
"Potter Lake is being cleaned up and we're adding plants and lights to that area." Helsel said.
A new lighting project that was to be completed by graduation has also been delayed. The project will add small lights to sidewalks around the Campanile, Potter
Lake, the Dole Human Development Center, and the Adams Alumni Center. Due to the uncertain, weather, these lights are being installed after graduation.
One of the first things out-of-town visitors will notice will be the pot holes. However, the major work on the roads around campus will wait until mid-summer, according to Helsel
"We are waiting to get some end of the year money to fix the roads," Helsel said. "But for now all the crews can do id fill the pot holes with gravel.
"On top of all that, we've got work to do over on the new Laed Center. We've really got our hands full, but we're doing what we can to have the place cleaned up for graduation!"
