Caps and gowns part of graduation tradition

They proceed down Mount Bright like a royal procession, bearing brightly colored flags and long, flowing gowns. It's the graduating class of 1993, and they have reached the culmination of their formal education.
And before they begin their last walk down the hill, a cap and gown will be added as the final touches to end the best years of their lives
Caps and gowns have been a traditional part of the graduation ceremony for many centuries and can trace their beginnings back to Oxford in the 14th century. The gown had many variations in design and was the style until the 16th century. But after 1600, the gown rarely was worn by anyone except professional men.
In 1855, there was a widespread student movement to wear gowns at commencement ceremonies. The graduates seemed to feel a need for a dignified apparel for the occasion, and the traditional qualities of the gown appealed to them.
As for the cap, no one knows exactly when or how it became a part of the graduation ceremony. But in early Roman times, when a slave was freed, he was allowed to put on a cap. So many scholars believed that the cap worn by a graduate was the sign of his independence, and that it was bound to be
worn at all university ceremonies
Tassels did not appear until the late 1800s and different colors were used to distinguish the different degrees. They are still used widely today and hold the original meaning of their ancestors.
And although traditional caps and gowns are still the hallmark of graduation ceremonies, students of today use their creative side to add something that sets them apart from every other graduate. The Allied Health graduates at the University of Kansas blow up surgical gloves and dangle them off their caps, while the Fine Arts students attach anything from painbrushes to beer cans on theirs.
students at KU, however, share different beliefs on the meaning of caps and gowns.
Amy Coyne, Olathe senior, said she believed that graduation would not be complete without the traditional regalia.
"Whenever I envision someone walking down the hill, I always think of them in a cap and gown," she said. "I want to be a part of that. Tradition is a big deal at KU, and graduation wouldn't be the same without a cap and gown on."
Yet some students look at it as just another hassle before they are finally free of all the University's rules.

Gina Graham, Olathe senior, would not mind if caps and gowns were left out.
"Caps and gowns are more symbolic than anything," she said. "I really don't care about wearing them — I'd be more comfortable in a pair of shorts and a T-shirt. But my parents will love it!"
