While many KU students see commencement as the final step of their long journey through college, some graduating seniors plan to continue to walk down the educational path to graduate school.
KU officials give several reasons for why students want to enroll in graduate school; to delay entering a job-scarce economy, to further their education in a chosen field, and to command the higher salary that often comes with an advanced degree.
"I think because of the economy and all the people who are having trouble finding work, more students are coming back to graduate school," he said.
Gregory L. Frost, assistant to the Dean of the Graduate School, said graduate school provides students with an opportunity to remain in school while waiting out a poor job market.
But Ruth Hillers, Director of the graduate division of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, cautions prospective graduate students to choose a field of graduate study they are really interested in, not just one that might provide them a better job or higher salary.
Hillers said a student's master's program should be in a primary interest, not just something the student would make more money at after finishing school.
"What you're going to graduate school for is your 'life-love,'" Hilers said. "You eat, breath, and sleep your field of study for three years."
Despite these steady numbers over the last few years, Hillers said that there have been marked increases in the number of applicants for several college graduate pro-

"English has had a tremendous increase at KU," Hillers said. "Also, communication studies along with Soviet and East European Studies. ... Most increases in graduate programs come from an increased demand in the job market, but then that wouldn't necessarily explain a master's in English."
Al Johnson, associate dean of the School of Law, said that the number of applicants for the law school has remained steady over the past several years — about 1,100 applicants for an entering class size of 175. He attributed the consistent numbers to the amount of time and effort required to get a law degree.
"You usually don't just come here and decide to give up in two weeks," Johnson said.
Two fields of graduate work that remain both popular and consistently competitive are the law degree and the master's of business administration, according to administrators.
David Collins, associate director of the KU Graduate Business School, attributes the M.B.A.'s popularity to the increased career and salary potential such a degree allows.
"The pay scale is a lot higher once you get the M.B.A.," Collins said. "There's often thousands of dollars difference between an undergraduate business degree and the M.B.A."
