As seniors prepare for the last walk down the hill,some are saying goodbye to their former careers as students and facing the real world with all of its excitement and uncertainty. Remembering all-night parties, cramming for tests and the stress of waiting for a report card will soon be a thing of the past as seniors don caps and gowns and take their last steps to careers. But the uncertainty of facing the real world has seniors skeptical about their future in a recessionion economy. Many seniors plan to go to graduate school to better their chances at finding the career they want while they wait out a bad economy. "I'm concerned about not being able to get a job with just a bachelor of science degree." she said. Kathi Alvested, Independence senior who ultimately wants a degree in veterinary medicine, said she is worried about how she will pay for graduate school. Some seniors are worried about their future plans for having families of their own, owning homes and finding a rewarding career. Indeed, most seniors' hopes for the future are dampened by the uncertainty of what lies just beyond graduation. Many students are concerned about losing their friends and dealing with the security of being a student Even so, many others must find jobs to pay "It scares me facing the real world after we've spent 16 of our 21 years in school." Alvested said. "School has been your career so far. So what are you going to do now?" Frank DeSelvo, a psychologist at Watkins Memorial Health Center, addressed the common problem of students experiencing an identity crisis as they prepare to graduate. DeSelvo said that students often have high expectations when they go out into the job world and need to realize the difference between passing a test and being able to perform a task in the field. "The most common fear is the change from university college student status to professional status," DeSelvo said. "Students are concerned whether all of the book learning they've had in school is going to transfer or not to the practical skills needed in the real world." "By and large, the graduation process is another life transition time and the stresses associated with any major change in life transition are ones that are most prominent." DeSelvo said. For graduates this year, the job market has intensified those fears. "Once folks can grasp the reality of whatever it is they are concerned about, it's not so ominous and it can be placed in a context of normal kind of feeling that should be expected," DeSelvo said.
