Visitors to Lawrence during that weekend stimulate economy

In a college town like Lawrence, visitors who come to commencement festivities provide a boost to the city's economy.
Visitors Bureau, graduation will bring at least $1 million to the city.
Lawrence restaurants, bars, shops and hotels have been anticipating the weekend of May 14 when many KU graduates' families will visit Lawrence and its businesses.
According to Judy Billings, administrative assistant for the Lawrence Convention and
Billings added that some of Lawrence's 810 hotel rooms, which range in price from $35-$180, have been booked for commencement weekend since the summer of 1992.
Because many graduates will want to show their guests the city of Lawrence and its hot spots, many bars, restaurants and shops are adding staff for commencement weekend.

"We're staffing for commencement weekend day times like they were weekend evenings," said Sherri Smart, the assistant manager of the Cornucopia Restaurant, 180 Massachusetts St.
Benchwarner's Sports Bar & Grill,1601 23rd St., is also anticipating a bigger crowd
"There are several parties going on that weekend," said Chris Miller, a bartender at Benchwarmer's. "We'll have the bar fully staffed."
The KU Bookstore is preparing for graduation weekend by extending hours, adding staff and adding merchandise.
Monica Seiter, assistant manager for merchandising at the KU Bookstore, said she added merchandise like alumni apparel and license plates to target visitors and new graduates leaving KU.
Lawrence hotels as well as restaurants have been anticipating more business on commencement weekend.
"We've been booked since late last May," said Jonnie Gary, relief manager of the Trav-
elodge motel, 801 Iowa St.
Rhonda Perdue, receptionist at The Eldridge Hotel, 701 Massachusetts St., said they had a three-page waiting list for this year's graduation weekend and half of their rooms are already booked for next year's graduation weekend.
The fact that Lawrence hotels are booked for graduation weekend poses a problem for the visitors that don't have reservations. These visitors unfortunately have to reserve rooms as far away as Kansas City or Topeka, some of which are already booked for that weekend.
"We filled up our reservations for graduation weekend just recently," said Wendy Rvan, manager of the Holldome in Topeka.
