The caps and gowns have been ordered announcements sent out, and travel plans have been made by the family. What else is left? The dilemma of what to get the graduate to commemorate this achievement.

or family members and friends who are trying to decide what to buy for students walking down Campanile Hill this May. there are a number of gifts that don't cost as much as the all-expense paid trip to Europe or the brand new car with a bright red bow on the hood. In addition, the graduation presents received from family and friends can also be practical, and help to make the transition from school to the next step much easier.
Books make excellent gifts for the graduate because they are inexpensive and useful. according to Bill Getz, assistant managwide variety and selection offered. In addition, these businesses have showrooms and toll-free numbers from which buyers can pick out gifts.
Getz suggested giving books that focus on the profession the graduate is going into. Students going into law might benefit from a copy of Black's Law Dictionary, while future doctors from KU could use the newest version of the Physician's Desk Reference.
In addition, job bank books, which assist graduates in finding work in cities all over the nation, are among the more popular sellers this time of year. Getz said. "But on the other hand, sometimes light reading is in order, since people usually have more time to read during the summer months," he said.
"Fiction and best sellers are good for taking the mind off graduating," said Getz. "But it's all a matter of the tastes of the recipient."
While books can improve the mind of the graduate, other gifts can help to polish another side of graduates, their appearance.
Clothes make great gifts for graduates, especially the professional attire such as business suits and dress shirts that can be worn to that first job after college.
Graduation is also the right time to buy clothes, according to Greg Easter, manager of Easton's, a local men's clothier, 839 Mass.
St. Easter said his store increases inventory and selection more this time of year than any other, in order to accommodate the rush of buyers who want to either begin or add to their professional wardrobe.
Easter said graduates usually take advantage of the visit by family to shop for new clothes.
"With mom and dad in town, you can bring them along to pick out suits and accessories," Easter said. Many young men come into Easton's with mothers in tow, to get the right opinion on what looks best.
Local jewelers are also good places to visit when shopping for soon-to-be alums. Watches are popular among shoppers for graduates, according to Brad Parsons, manager of Mark's Jewelers, 817 Massachusetts St. Parsons said timepieces sell because they're functional gifts that can be personalized.
"The key aspect with buyers is that the watch or charm is engravable, where they can put a message congratulating their son or daughter, or wish the graduate well in the coming years after leaving KU." Parsons said.
Some shoppers look to catalog companies when buying for graduates, because of the
For example, The Sharper Image, 333 W. 47th St., on the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Mo., typically sees many of shoppers looking for something to get KU graduates, according to Andy Schnieder, assistant manager.
Schnieder said leather briefcases, address books and daily planners made practical gifts for those entering the business world.
"But we also sell a number of gifts associated with music, including portable walkmans and five-foot tower racks to hold compact discs," said Schneider. "Sometimes gag gifts are in order, and we sell our share of 'Super Soaker' water cannons and 'Loney Toons' cartoon-character neckties. It varies from graduate to graduate."
As before, not all gift buyers may be able to put the keys of the gift-wrapped sports car in the hands of those in caps and gowns. But there are a variety of different gifts to choose from, to make the special occasion last well beyond the walk down the hill.
