Economic indicators show the recession is behind us, and many seniors are optimistic about the job market. However, the effects of the recession are still affecting other graduates, who are finding out that their dream job will not be waiting for them after graduation.
"The indicators are showing that the recession is over, but the job market does not parallel that," said Fred Madaus, director at the placement center at the School of Business.
He then went on to explain that during the recession many companies came to the realization that they were hiring too many people. Therefore, many of the big companies are not hiring very many people now.
Madaus sai that there was a market out
unere, though it was not necessarily with the Fortune 500 companies. He said the small and mid-size companies were doing most of the recruiting through the business school's placement center.
Like the business school center, most placement centers on campus charge a fee, usually $50 or less, for placing a student's name and resume in a computer database, to which companies have access. The student can also use the computer to see what employment opportunities are available.
"I have interviewed with mostly smaller companies, but I am having a tough time finding the right job for me," said Tom Stith, Lawrence senior.
Madaus said that there were jobs out there being offered to students, but the key to finding them was preparation.
"It is not always necessarily the best qualified person who gets the job, it is the best prepared person who has a better chance," said Madaus.
He said he believed that students should begin preparing when they were freshmen or sophomores. He said that a good way to prepare was to acquiring part-time jobs and internships.
"The indicators are showing that the recession is over,but the job market does not parallel that."

It used to be that the yearly salary was important, but now people are more interested in gaining experience for their future. That is why volunteering and internships are very important in the preparation process.
Sith said that the companies he interviewed with were not as interested in his grade point average as they were in his leadership skills and his ability to communicate with others.
The GPA is still important.
He added that recruiters were looking at other qualifications as well. Representatives from Northwestern Mutual Life stressed that they expected strong leadership and communications skills in their employees.
Maddus said that the ideal student should have four main qualities: a high GPA, participation in as many clubs and activities as possible, career experience and be a dynamic interviewer. Since very few students can achieve all four, then the student should concentrate on a particular strength. For example, if the student does not have a 4.0GPA, then he or she should try to excel in gaining more career experience or in joining campus organizations.
Madaus also listed a few of the jobs that were hiring many students. Sales jobs have the most opportunity, because no matter what the industry is, it always needs to sell its product or service. Finance and human resources are two more fields that have many opportunities for students, he said, but that was subject to change as most career opportunities are in today's market.
"Anyone who tells you the GPA is not important is lying to you," said Maddus.
