Monday, May 3, 1993 SPORTS UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN 11 Softball team wins three of four Jayhawks lose last game of series in extra-innings on road against Cyclones By Mark Button Close, but no cigar. The Kansas softball team needed to sweep four games from Iowa State this weekend to secure itself a bid to the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament. Seven innings into the fourth game, Kansas' chance for a sweep was still alive. The Jayhawks claimed victories in both halves of Saturday's doubleheader and in the first game of yesterday's. However, the Cyclones took Kansas into extra innings and defeated the Hawks in the final game of the series. The Jayhawks, whose hitting had failed them in the past six games, exploded in the first inning of Saturday's early game, scoring three runs. Sophomore first baseman Lora Richardson led the onslaught with a home run and four runs batted in. Junior pitcher Stephan Williams earned her 25th victory of the season in the 7-2 Kansas romp. Williams then notched another victory, as she shut out Iowa State in the second game 4-0. Overall, Saturday saw the previously slumping Jayhawks pound 19 hits while their adversaries managed only five. Yesterday, Kansas picked up where it left off on Saturday, blowing out the Cyclones 9-1 in the first game. Senior catcher Erin Wahns was 2-for-3 with 4 RBL and senior center fielder Shanna Cole was 1-for-3 while scoring three runs. Richardson also crossed home plate three times. Iowa State managed to escape the series with some pride, as it defeated Kansas 4-2 in yesterday's eight-imming second game. Kansas must now play the waiting game. On May 10th, the National Softball Selection Committee will decide which teams are to be invited to regional postseason play. iowa State 4, Kansas 2 (game 2) | | ab | r | h | fhl | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | ss Morgan | 4 | 0 | 2 | 1 | | if Saby | 4 | 0 | 1 | 1 | | 1b Richardson | 4 | 1 | 1 | 3 | | 1b Chapple | 4 | 0 | 0 | 1 | | c Kaulhaus | 4 | 0 | 0 | 1 | | rt Dutil | 4 | 0 | 0 | 1 | | 3b Newbern | 4 | 0 | 0 | 1 | | bailey | 2 | 0 | 0 | 1 | | 2b Chappe | 3 | 1 | 0 | 1 | | ph Herrera | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 | **34** **2** **8** **1** **2** | | ab | r | h | nh | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | cf Eagan | 5 | 1 | 1 | 0 | |rf Holcomb | 5 | 1 | 1 | 0 | |3 Bmiller | 3 | 1 | 0 | 0 | |c Finger | 3 | 1 | 0 | 0 | |M acMaster | 3 | 2 | 1 | 1 | |1B Hogan | 3 | 2 | 1 | 1 | |bs Boom | 4 | 1 | 1 | 0 | |2B goddard | 4 | 0 | 1 | 0 | |if Dahoma | 4 | 0 | 3 | 2 | |p Balakshin | 4 | 1 | 0 | 0 | |0 | 15 | 11 | 3 | 0 | Kansas Williams (L) I P H R E ER RB BB Williams (L) L 11 4 1 0 5 lowa State I P H R E ER RB BB Brown (W) H 8 2 2 0 1 E Hogan, Boum, Osborne, Morgan, Newborn, Cappo **LOB** Kansas 8, Iowa State 10 **2B** SB Cole Big Eight Conference baseball standings The Kansas baseball team moved into a tie for first place in the Big Eight by winning two of three games against Kansas State during the weekend. league overall Kansas 16 7 35 11 Oklahoma St. 16 7 31 12 Missouri 12 9 25 16 Oklahoma 10 9 27 17 Nebraska 10 10 27 19 Kansas St. 5 14 14 28 Iowa St. 3 16 12 25 WEEKEND RESULTS Kansas State 11. Texas Wesleyan 2 0 Ohio at Iowa state 5, poa rain Sunday Kansan sportswriter Mother said there would be days like this. Although No. 16 Kansas won the first two games of its three-game series at Kansas State, the Jayhawks committed a season-high six errors yesterday, losing to the Wildcats 11-7. "We stink it up," said Kansas coach Dave Bingham. "That's all there is to it." Frank Myers Field already was a quagmire, but a 1½ hour rain delay made it look more like the setting for a truck and tractor pull than a baseball field. The Jayhawks took an early 6-14 lead after two innings, and the Wildcats came back, scoring seven runs to the Jayhawks' one. "It was very ugly, but we'll take it." K-State coach Mike Clark said. "It feels like an anil off our back." Kansas senior pitcher David Sout, 6-3, took the loss as the Jayhawks fell to 35-11 overall. Their 16-7 record in the conference is tied with Oklahoma State for first. The Jayhawks and the Cowboys each have three conference games remaining — Kansas at home next week against Nebraska, and Oklahoma State at home next week against Missouri. on Saturday, freshman pitcher Jamie Splittorff, 6-0, pitched his first complete game, leading the Jayhawks to a 5-1 victory. That victory tied the current Kansas club with Floyd Temple's 1978 team for the school record for most single-season victories. Friday, senior Tom Stewart, 6-3, got the victory as Kansas edged the Wild cats 5-4. The Jayhawks play host to Benedic tine at 7 tonight. ...
