Call 749-2224 for reservations Jayhawks' confidence rising as season's end nears Bv Matt Dovle Kansan sportswriter Kansas men's golf coach Ross Randall was looking forward to this spring's golf season because of the talent and experience his team had. Little did he know that it would take nearly to the end of the season for everything to come together for the Javhaws. Kansas finished 11th at the South Florida Invitational in late February, and tied for sixth at the Central Florida Invitational in early March after leading the tournament with nine holes to play. the lack of good weather in January and February kept the team from practicing outdoors at Alvamar Golf Club, and that lack of practice affected Kansas in its first two tournaments in Florida this spring. "Golf is based on confidence, and confidence is based on repetition," Randall said. "We didn't have the repetitions to gain confidence because of the weather." The weather has improved in the last two months, and so has the play of the Jayhawks. Kansas has had a fourth place finish and two second place finishes in their last four tournaments, including last week's Big Eight Championships, since the two tournaments in Florida. "We are as confident going into the regionals as we have ever been," said senior Jim Young, who earned All-Big Eight honors after finishing in a tie for eighth at the Conference Championships at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson. The Jayhawks finished second at the Big Eight Championships, losing by one stroke to Oklahoma State. Junior Matt Gogel, who placed third at the Conference Championships, and senior Brad Bruno, who placed seventh, joined Young in earning All-Big Eight honors. "We finished on a high note at the Big Eight's, and I cannot remember a time that I have seen Coach so unbeat. "Young said. The NCAA Central Regional tournament will be played May 19-21 on the Scarlett Course of the Ohio State University Golf Club in Columbus, Ohio. However, Kansas has a tuneup tournment, the Perry Maxwell Intercollegiate, May 15-16 at the Dornick Hills Golf Club in Ardmore, Okla. The Perry Maxwell Intercollegiate$^{4}$ field has seven of the top 10 teams in the nation, with defending NCAA$^{4}$ champion Arizona, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas as the main headliners. The Jayhawks will be aiming for their No.1 goal of the season, according to Randall, in Columbus — qualifying for the NCAA Championships June 2-5 in Lexington, Ky. Kansas has not qualified for the NCAA Championships since 1980, and to do so they must be one of the top 10 teams in Columbus. "This year our approach has been that we expect to be competitive in every tournament, and we expect to make it to NCAA's this year," Young said. "I'm not allowing myself to think of any other possibilities." It's the end of classes '93. The Information & Candy Counter and KU Post Office is also finally done and in place.
