The 57-year-old monarch's motorcade through Amman, Jordan's capital, was reduced to a snail's pace as crowds swarmed over royal guards to shake his hand. Since he was crowned May 2, 1953, at age 17, Hussein has survived countless assassination attempts, coup plots, several Arab-Israeli wars, a civil war and the hostility of neighboring states. His popularity has soared in the last four years with a program of democratic reforms he believes will ensure the survival of his ancient dynasty and his country. He hopes the reforms will serve as a model for other Arab nations. His refusal to join the U.S.led coalition against Saddam Hussein after Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait, favoring diplomacy over military action, left him isolated internationally but made him a hero in the eyes of his people. Jordan was the only Arab state to give citizenship to Palestinian refugees from the 1948 and 1967 wars with Israel. Large numbers of Palestinians, who make up half the 3.5 million population and have in the past clashed with native Jordanians, joined in the celebrations. The main focus of the celebrations was the display at Marka Air Base, east of Amman, that took place before the king's motorcade through the city. Tens of thousands of Jordanian, watched as Bedouin warriors in their traditional robes, mounted on horses and camels, thundered below the royal box pledging allegiance to Hussein. The king, Queen Noor, his U.S.-born wife, and the king's younger brother, Crown Prince Hassan, viewed the parade as air force F-5 fighters and other warplanes flew in formation overhead The artillery included an old field camouflage used in the Arab Revolt led by Hussein's great-grandfather, Sharif Hussein, against the Turks in World War 1. The master of ceremonies, Maj. Gen. Tahsin Shurthum, said in an address to the king. "You have built modern Jordan with your determination and defense of the Palestinian cause. Your heroic stand is our pride." Among the Bedouin leaders at the ceremonies was Sheik Zwad Husseini. 104 He accompanied Hussein's grandfather, King Abdallah, in 1921 when he entered Amanm to establish the Hashemtte throne under British tutelage in what was then known as Transjordan. It became the kingdom of Jordan in 1946. Hussein's family is one of the noblest in Islam because it can trace its lineage back to Fatima, daughter of the prophet Mohammed, who founded the Muslim religion in the seventh century. Militants blamed for killing of whites Government searches for murder suspects The Associated Press EAST LONDON, South Africa — Hundreds of police hunted yesterday for black assailants who killed five whites in a gun and grenade attack — which again bore the message that the wealthy suburbs are no longer spared from political violence. Some whites called for a crackdown. But President F.W. de Klerk appealed for restraint, saying the killings must not provoke retaliation. No one claimed responsibility for the Saturday night attack at a hotel in the southern coastal city of East London, but the militant Pan Africanist Until late last year, political attacks against white civilians were extremely rare. Most unrest in South Africa involved clashes between black factions and was largely restricted to black townships far removed from the white suburbs. But 15 whites have been killed in a series of attacks in the past six months, most of them around East London and Johannesburg. The government blamed the Pan Africanist Congress. had burst into the Highgate Hotel, tossing tear gas into a bar, a hand grenade into the pool room and strafing the area with AK-47 assault rifles, witnesses said. The killing apparently will not derail negotiations in which black and white groups are trying to fix a date for the first election to include blacks. But the shooting heightens tensions just when the country seemed to be calming down following the April 10 assassination of Chris Hani, a popular leader in the African National Congress and the South African Communist Party. Police said they believed the same gang was involved in the Saturday attack, but declined to say whether they were looking specifically for PAC members. "It is critically important at this time that the leaders of all political parties and groups should exercise maximum restraint," de Klerk said in response to the killings. Bosnian peace plan doubted The Associated Press LONDON — Secretary of State Warren M. Christopher said he was skeptical of the approval of an international peace plan yesterday by the leader of the Bosnian Serbs and continued trying to allay British qualms about using force to end the ethnic war in the Balkans. At the start of a six-day euro trip, Christopher sad the United States would not be deterred in trying to round up support for military measures against the Serbs. "What really matters is what happens on the ground." Christopher said, after speaking twice by phone to President Bill Clinton. "Whether the killing stops, whether the ad is permitted to get in to those who need it, whether the heavy weapons are silenced, whether the parties carry out their agreements." Within hours of Christopher's remarks, Serb forces lobbed four shells into Sarajevo, killing at least two people. Two shells hit a police station near the presidency building. In Washington, Clinton released a statement calling approval of the peace plan a "positive step." But he said he would continue planning for military force in case the Serbs "do not act in good faith." Three black men wearing masks Christopher said the Serbs had approved agreements in the past to end the fighting but then went on with the war. Administration officials are concerned that Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic's signing of the international peace plan in Greece was an empty gesture to avoid military action from the West. 1-800-669-4682 Healthy Men Needed Receive up to $800 IMTCI, a pharmaceutical research company is now seeking volunteers to participate in a medical research study Celebrate With Us!
