The top contenders for the women's team are senior high jumper Mary-Beth Labosky, junior distance runner Julia Saul and sophomore triple jumper Cassandra Bryant-Wans. Three Juniors on the men's team are also contenders; middle distance runner Dan Waters, long jumper Harun Hazim and distance runner Michael Cox. Waters won the 800 and Bryant-Wans the triple jump. Waters and Bryant-Wans are Kansas' only returning athletes that won at last year's conference indoors. Waters said that he wasn't expecting to repeat in the 800 because the Big Eight has become more competitive. Many of the teams have attracted high-quality freshmen and junior college recruits. "I'm just hoping to make it to the finals and get into the top three," he said. "That's pretty much everybody's goal on the team." Kansas' top two pole vaulters, juniors John Bazzoni and Brandon Blain, have missed the entire season because of leg injuries. Schwartz said that he did not expect the men's team to crack the conference's upper division this weekend. Last year the men finished fifth. Most of the women returned this season, and Schwartz said that the athletes had confidence going in to the meet. Last year's second-place finish for the women's team was its highest in the conference indoors since 1980. He said the women's team would probably finish in the top three. "I look for us to have good performances," he said. Despite the injuries that have plagued both the men and women, Schwartz said that he was optimistic. Frisbee club ready for spring spin The women's team will be without two of its top athletes, spinner Natasha Shafer and middle distance runner Kristi Kloster, both sophomores. By Mark Button Kansan sportswriter Can a game using a frisbee be considered a sport? Yes. In fact, it's the ultimate. The Ultimate Frisbee Club is one of the biggest club sports at the University. Its 60 members play all year, at both the college and club levels. Anyone can play at the club level, but college-level play requires registration with the Ultimate Players Association and a $15 fee. The association divides the nation into five regions. Kansas competes in the Central Region. Ultimate made its debut at Kansas in 1978. Since then, both the men's and women's teams have been in the forefront of national competition. In 1984, the association held its first men's national tournament. Kansas' men's team, the Horrorontzals, was one of the Central Region's representatives in the first tournament. That started a string of eight consecutive appearances in the national tournament by the men. However, last season the Horrorzontals failed to advance to the tournament. Brad Hines, Lawrence junior and two-year club member, said failure to make the tournament last year would be the primary motivating factor for the club. "In previous years our goal was to make it to nationals," Hines said. "This year our goal is to win the whole thing." The first national tournament for the women was in 1987, which was won by Kansas' Betty, the team from the University of Kansas. Except for Recreation Services provides the club with $1,000 each year. Holly Larison, six-year member and the Central Region's college coordinator, said that the money from Recreation Services was spent on entry fees for 10-to-12 tournaments, first-aid equipment and advertising. the 1989 season, the women have returned to the tournament each year. Gina Cameli, four-year member and president of the club, said that members were responsible for their own uniforms and travel expenses, but that the club still competed as much as possible. "We love it," Cameli said. "That's why we do it." Both teams open the spring season on March 17 at the Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas. ...
