Big-hitting Hogs next for'Hawks No.30 Arkansas' speed power pose challenge By Brady Prauser Kansan sportswriter Eight inches of snow in Hogland-Maupin Stadium, Kansas' home field, makes playing baseball impossible. Fortunately, the Jayhawks are farther south - in warmer weather - as they open a three-game series with Arkansas in Fayetteville today. Arkansas, 4-1, is ranked 30th nationally in the College Baseball poll after crushing its first four opponents by a combined total of 58 runs to 12. However, three of those opponents were Division II schools, including Southwest Baptist University, which lost 21-5 to the Razorbacks Monday. Arkansas beat Kansas State 10-1 on Sunday. Despite his team's explosive offensive performance, Arkansas coach Norm DeBriny said his team would have its hands full with Kansas. "Kansas has the kind of pitching that will test us to see if we are for real," said DeBriyn, who is in his 24th season coaching the Razorbacks. "We were impressed with them last year. They probably were a better ball club than we were." Kansas won three of four games against Arkansas last season in Fayetteville and one at home. "We felt that was the best Kansas team we had seen," Clark said. "We'll have to do a better job with the bats this year." Arkansas hitting coach Doug Clark also was impressed with Kansas. Kansas, which returns 20 lettermen from last season, has played only three games so far, winning two of three against Grand Canyon University in Phoenix Feb. 12-14. The Jayhawks were scheduled to play Southeast Missouri State last weekend, but the series was canceled because of snow. Favetteville had received no snow as of last night, Sources: Kansas Sports Information, Grand Canyon Sports Information but did get occasional rain showers. Arkansas' stadium has artificial turf, which is easier to play on in inclement weather than natural grass. Senior right-handlers Tom Stewart and David Soult, who had victories against Grand Canyon, are scheduled to start Friday's and Saturday's games against Arkansas. Stewart and Soult have pitched nearly identical games this season. Each threw five innings, giving up no runs and two hits. It was the first career pitching start for both players. Junior David Meyer, a left bander, is slated to start Sunday. Kansas coach Dave Bingham said the Jayhaws needed to concentrate on stopping the Razorbacks running game and not allow them to have big runs-on innings. "At Arkansas, you can't give them anything." Bingham said, "You start giving them a run here and there, they get momentum and then you have problems. They are going to score against us, but we have to avoid the big innings." 928 Mass 843-0611 K-STATE SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 28 2 PM *... not some diva manque with a polité little pianist paddling behind ...
