SPRING BREAK'93 Friday,February 26,1993 5 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Making plans for break early pays off Confirm travel before leaving, warns Better Business Bureau By Ezra Wolfe Kansan staff writer As many KU students will soon find out firsthand, it's a lot warmer in Cancun, Mexico, than in Lawrence. But the Cancun sun may not shine on students who want to visit the Mexico resort for spring break and have not yet made plans. Many flights to Cancun and other locations are fully booked. If tickets are available, they are more expensive than three months ago, said Marsha Atchison, manager at Maipintour Travel Service. 813 Massachusetts St. Cancun is the most popular spring break destination this year, in part because cheap flights are available out of Kansas City and because a vacation in Mexico generally is cheaper than other locations, she said. "People go because the packages are cheaper and they can get good deals on seven-night packages," said Marcia West, travel consultant at Sunflower Travel Service, 704 Massachusetts St. But students wanting to make last-minute travel plans should expect to pay more money, she said. "To get a good deal, it's probably too late," West said. "It's wise to start about six months ahead. Anytime you purchase tickets close to the travel date, the prices get higher." Both travel agents said packages were the best deal. "If you want to save money, a package is the best way to go." West said. A package usually includes transportation and lodging. But West said most packages for Cancun were sold out. However, some space is available on several commercial airlines. Both agents warned potential buyers to buy from a travel agent because they have experience dealing with companies selling travel packages. Andrea Marling of the Lawrence Better Business Bureau said students should be familiar with the company they purchase travel packages from. "We encourage people to check out the company with the Better Business Bureau," Marling said. "Contact the hotel and check to make sure reservations have been Spring break travel guide following are the lowest quoted travel fares as of yesterday. Many of the flights may be full already.
