Bleurman said the show was canceled because it did not fit in with the station's constitution, which states that the station is a laboratory radio station with programming meant to serve the student body. He also said the executive staff wanted more structure in the show. "We felt there was too much going on and talking about nothing," Beurman said. Station manager Margo Werber, Overland Park senior, said the decision was an unanimous one made by the station's executive staff. The executive staff comprises the station manager, program director, promotions director, business manager, news director, sports director, development director and the station's GTA. The members are all students, Werber said. Werber said the executive staff had expressed concerns about the show as early as January, when the show began. Beurman said that the station's general manager and executive staff let the show's staff know about their concerns, but that they felt the staff ignored them. Jason Marck, sidekick to the show's host, said the executive staff wanted to see format changes. The show's host, J.J. D'Aprile, Chicago senior, said no one on the executive staff told him what was expected. "The they wanted guests on the show," he said. "We had people from Student Union Activities and the parking department. But nobody called in when we had guests." Werber said the executive staff and the station's faculty general manager, Tim Mensendiek, discussed the problems with the show's staff several times. Beurmann said the final straw came on Friday, after the JKH news staff had been reporting on a campus measles outbreak that day. Mark said that by 4 p.m., test results made it apparent that there was no measles outbreak. He said that when "Talk Soup" came on the air, the show's hosts reported a "weasel outbreak" on campus and asked listeners to call in and report weasel sightings. "It was a joke," Marck said, and added that he thought news staff members felt their journalistic integrity was being mocked. D'Aprile said the show was quite popular. "We felt it was just not proper and possibly demeaning to the news department," Beurman said. The show's executive producer, Rob Driscoll, Countryside. Ill., senior, said the show averaged 20 calls a day. some days we were getting up to 30 calls a day," he said. D'Aprile, who also appeared on last semester's "Thejohn Boss Show," said the Boss show sometimes recieved no calls, so he felt the number of calls was a good indicator of the show's success. Warber said the station had not yet conducted any surveys to determine the show's popularity. BRIEFS Commission candidates to speak to public at social gathering tonight An equal opportunity employer The Lawrence Association of Neighborhoods will play host to a social gathering for Lawrence City Commission candidates at 7:30 tonight in the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St. The gathering will be open to the public. "This is a chance for Lawrence citizens to meet the candidates and talk to them face to face," said Linda Joler, president of the association. "There's no format Phelis arrested, charged for defamation and there are no speeches. It's just a chance for people to get to know the candidates and to drink a cup of coffee." Joker said candidates in the March 2 primary election would be allowed to pass out campaign literature and answer questions. The association will hold a formal question and answer session with the final candidates on April 6 before the election. TORKEA—The Rev. Fred Phelps, a Topeka pastor and anti-gay demonstrator, is facing criminal charges again. Phelps, 63, was charged Tuesday with three counts of criminal defamation for statements he distributed by electronic fax last fall about Beth Mechler, a Topeka City Council member, and Doug Shannon, a Topeka police officer. According to court records, Phelps admitted in open meetings that he made false statements about Mechler. The court records also said statements he made about Shannon were false. He faces a maximum sentence of one year in jail and a fine of $2,500 but was released on a $1,000 bond. Phelps was arrested Feb. 17 in connection with a warrant charging him with disorder conduct at a March 27, 1992 demonstration. He faces a maximum 3 days in prison for漏电 that charge. He was released on a $250 bond. Compiled from Associated Press and staff reports. ... PLACE AN AD FREE!
