Squires' debut came 57 years after an African-American athlete played for Kansas. In 1883, Ed Harvey was a three-sport athlete, participating in football, baseball and track, according to records at the Elizabeth M. Watkins Community Museum, 1047 Massachusetts St. Four years earlier, his older brothers, Grant and Sherman, became the first African-American athletes at Kansas when they played on the baseball team. Ed Harvey's son, Dean, 70, lives in Lawrence. He graduated from Lawrence High two years ahead of Monroe, who was best man at his wedding. Harvey said his father, who was a farmer, did not talk much about his playing days at Kansas. But he did say that his father talked about discrimination he faced when refused service at hotels and restaurants when he traveled with the teams. "But the coach insisted that he stay with the team," he said. Dean Harvey said that his father's teammates did not discriminate against him. "He talked about how all the fellows considered each other equal," he said. "One man was just as good as the other one." Dean Harley offered an explanation why 57 years elapsed between his father's athletic career and that of LaVanness Squires. He said his father's generation often was more accepting of African Americans than later generations. "Times were pretty hard for a lot of people of that generation, and a lot of them worked together," Dean Harvey said. "In the early 1900s until about World War II, that is where a lot of the discrimination around here seems to have cropped up." A framed 19th century photograph of the Kansas football team hangs on the back wall of Bud's Barber Shop, and Ed Harvey is in the second row. Photos of Danny Manning and Adonis Jordan hang nearby. Monroe rescued the photograph of the football team from the old Robinson Gymnasium, which was torn down in the 1960s. Wescoe Hall now stands in its place. Wille Amison, smiling, admires the surroundings in the barber shop. Daron J. Bennett / KANSAN "There is a lot of history up there, and Bud knew them all," Ammons says. The walls of Bud's Barber Shop are covered with nearly.300 photos of past and present Kansas athletes.
