This semester they work out for two hours every other day, on top of cheering at all the home basketball games. The girls suffer many of the same kinds of injuries that most athletes do. Their dancing often results in back, knee and ankle injuries. But Richard Konzem, assistant athletic director, said that the spirit squad members were not athletes. "They are not an NCAA-sponsored sport," he said. "They are a support group for our athletes." The department treats the Crimson Girls as an auxiliary group. An example of this treatment is the fact that they aren't allowed to use the advising and tutoring services that the department supplies the athletes. And then there is financing. The spirit squad, which includes varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders and yell leaders, the Crimson Girls The men's basketball team gets $1,222,660. and mascots receive $25,000 each year from the department. The $2,500 is supposed to cover the salaries of Brady, Kelli Brabler, the coach of the Crimson Girls, and the three cheerleader coaches. It is also spent on a $200 scholarship for each of 16 varsity cheerleaders and the 11 Crimson Girls, all the shoes and uniforms of the cheerleaders and Crimson Girls, and all travel costs. Brady said the spirit squad actually operated on a $60,000 budget. To raise the extra money, each Crimson Girl is required to solicit five $50 sponsors, as well as contribute time to the Junior Hawkette program, which takes away many of the girls' study hours. The Junior Hawkette program is a series of six-week dancing and cheering clinics for young girls in Lawrence, Topeka and the Kansas City area. The spirit squad members also put on many one-day clinics for junior high and high school students throughout the year. Bob Frederick, athletic director. "We've done what we could," he said. "We had to cut the budget back; we're in a budget crunch." said he would like to provide all of their funds. Aside from the money problems facing the girls, they have been unhappy with people's attitudes toward them. Last December, the Jayhawk football team earned the right to play in the Alba Bowl in Hawaii. The department, which received $750,000 for its participation in the bowl, decided to send two Crimson Girls, two yell leaders and two cheerleaders. A former Kansas cheerleader anonymously donated money for six more spirit squad members to make the trip. Two additional cheerleaders, one Crimson Girl and the Baby Jayhawk mascot paid their own ways. First-year Crimson Girl Julie Hammond said she was more concerned with the squad members being labeled non-athletes than the insufficient funds. "The money is the smallest issue," she said. "All I want is for attitudes to change." Not all people disfavor the group. Kansas basketball player Patrick Richey said he respected the Crimson Girls. "They get the crowd up, and the crowd gets us going," he said. "You have to give them some of the credit for our performance." Looking toward the future. Brady and the spad are antimistic. Brady is working with Jill Godfrey, director of promotions with the department, looking for a major sponsor to help bring in more funding. Hull and Adams said that while in Hawaii the spirit squad met with Frederick and that he was now aware of their feelings. In response to the Hawaii trip, Fredrick said that he made the fairest decision possible for everyone involved. "The spirit squad means a lot to our program," he said. "I wanted to tell them that face-to-face." Hull said the team was impressed with Frederick's efforts. "He was very supportive of us," Hull said. "Hopefully, things are on the way up."
