SPORTS UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Wednesday, February 10, 1993 13 Kansas fights for tough victory By Jay Williams Kansan sportswriter CEDARFALLS, Iowa—Sophomore forward Alana Slatter's 31 points helped the Kansas women's basketball team struggle to a 75-73 victory against Northern Iowa last night in the UNI-Dome. Slatter scored 19 of her career-high 31 in the second half as Kansas, 13-7 overall and 5-4 in the Big Eight Conference, fought back from a five-point halftime deficit. The 6-foot Slatter said the Panthers defense allowed her good opportunities to score inside. Slatter shot 12 of 17 from the field and 7 of 10 from the free throw line. "They were playing behind me, and they were smaller," she said. "They weren't fighting to get in front of me." The game turned into a second half shootout between Slatter and Panthers' senior guard Amn Miller. Miller scored 20 of her game high 32 in the second half. The two often traded baskets: Slatter with a turnaround jump shot from the baseline followed by a Miller three-pointer or drive to the basket. "She's a great player," Slatter said of Miller. "She worked hard and drove to the basket and got to the foul line." Kansas coach Marian Washington also praised Miller's play. "She was their offense," Washington said. "She was able to drive and draw fonts." Miller was 10-for-12 at the line and a perfect 8-for-8 in the second half for the Panthers, who are 7-12 overall and 2-8 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Kansas junior guard Ericka Muncy sparked Kansas in the second half. Her steal and breakaway layup gave the Jayhawks a 48-44 lead with 12:58 remaining in the game. Muncy finished with a career-high nine points. Munny made one of two free throws with 35 seconds remaining, giving Kansas a 75-71 lead. The Panthers then scored and fouled junior center Lisa Tate on the Jayhawks' next possession with 20 seconds remaining. Fate missed the front end of the one-and-one, giving Northern Iowa a chance to tie or win the game. Kansas kept the ball away from Miller, forcing junior guard Traci Amos to shoot from 18 feet with four seconds remaining. Amos missed, and neither team could control the ball before time expired. The Jayhawks started sluggish, letting Northern Iowa take three fivepoint leads in the first half. Turnovers, the same problem that has hurt Kansas all season, once again stiffed the Jayhawks offense. Kansas had nine turnovers in the first nine minutes and finished with 23 for the game. Although Washington said her team was sluggish the whole game, she was pleased with the victory. "The fact is we won the ballgame and handled a team that played very well," Washington said.
