Kansas to face high-scoring seven-footer 'Hawks out to rope Cowboys By David Dorsey Kansas sportswriter Kansan sportswriter Oklahoma State sophomore center Bryant Reeves has taken the Big Eight Conference by storm, leading the conference in scoring and rebounding with 18.7 and 9.9 averages. The No. 7 Kansas men's basketball team will have to contend with the seven-footer at 7 tonight in Allen Field House, where the Jayhawks, 18-3 overall and 5-1 in the conference, will meet the Cowboys for the first time this season. "Earlier in the year you could say they're not as experienced." Williams said. "By now they've played almost 20 games, and during the last three weeks they've probably made bigger strides than just about any other team in the league." Oklahoma State, 13-4 and 4-3, was labeled an inexperienced team by its coach, Eddie Sutton, during the preseason. Kansas coach Roy Williams said he would not underestimate Oklahoma State even though Reeves is the Cowboys' only returning starter. The Cowboys have won three consecutive games and are coming off an 83-76 victory against Oklahoma on Saturday. They've won five of their last six games. Statistically, Oklahoma State is similar to Kansas. The Cowboys have limited their opponents to a 40.7 shooting percentage from the field while shooting 53 percent. The Jayhawks have limited opponents to a 41.4 percentage while leading the conference with a 54.5 field goal percentage. Last season, the teams met twice during the regular season and once during the conference tournament championship. All three games were defensive battles. Each team won at home, and Kansas won the tournament. "I think it'll be a very aggressive game and a very hard-fought game," Williams said. "They play hard, take care of the basketball, the whole bit. And they play very good defense." In the Jayhawks' 64-56 loss to the Cowboys last season in Stillwater, Okla., six Kansas players finished the game with at least four fouls. Eric Pauley, now a senator, foulled out of the game after playing only 14 minutes. Pauley will defend Reeves, but the matchup is similar to one he faces nearly every day in practice against teammate Greg Ostertag, another sophomore seven-footer. "I haven't really thought about his statistics or seen him play much this season," Pauley said. "But it's like playing against Greg. It's pretty much just the same." The Jayhawks are coming off a 68-64 loss Saturday at Nebraska, and Williams said he wanted to see improvement tonight. Only one player, junior forward Steve Woodberry, reached double figures in scoring. He finished with 17 points during his third start of the season in place of junior forward Darrin Hancock, who returned to action Saturday but did not start after missing two games because of an eye injury. If the Jayhawks win tonight, the victory will be No. 400 in the field house. Since the field house opened in 1955, the Jayhawks are 399-90 in the building. Kansas Jayhawks record: 18-3, 5-1 head coach: Roy Williams Williams, who said he was concerned about Hancock's conditioning, did not know yesterday whether Woodberry would remain a starter or whether Hancock would return to the role. **Probable starters** **Rex Walters** G Sr. 6-4 13.4 pp Ashley 6-4 12.5 pp B Strickler 5-11 12.3 pp **Richard Scott** F Jr. 6-7 11.6 pp **Steve Woodberry** C Jr. 6-9 4.3 pp **Eric Pauley** C Sr. 6-10 12.4 pp Probable Starters: Source: Kansas Sports Information Oklahoma State Cowboys record: 13-4, 4-3 head coach: Eddie Sutton Probable Starters: ■ Randy Rutherford G So. 6-13 1.9 pg ■ Brooks Thompson G Jr. 6-14 1.1 ppg ■ Fred Burley F Jr. 6-9 6.6 pg ■ Von Bennett F Jr. 6-9 10 pg ■ Bryant Reeves C So. 7-0 18.7 pg Dave Campbell / KANSAN Badminton Anyone? Sexual abstinence is the surest way to prevent STDs (including HIV) and pregnancy, but if you decide to have intercourse — use a latex condom and nonoxynol-9 spermicide every time. Condoms are available at Watkins pharmacy (3 for 50 cents). Communication and caring in relationships can help to reduce the incidence of STDs and unplanned pregnancy.
