OPINION Wednesday, February 10, 1993 5 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Inept police force blocks access to residence halls LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Once again, the total ineptness of the Lawrence Police Department, the KU police and the Kansas Highway Patrol was blatantly on display Feb. 1. They had no plan whatsoever to allow residents of the dorms on Daisy Hill to return home between 10 and 11:30 p.m. Ten minutes before the game ended, every incoming route was blocked, no exiting cars in sight! I left Elsworth Hall at 10 p.m. to go to the bus station for five minutes. I finally got back to the dorm at 11:15 p.m. This is ridiculous. Every intersection I came to there was some member of the three departments above telling me to go to a different intersection to get back home. Every place I went there was another member telling me to do something different. I finally stopped and asked one, "How do I get back to the dorm?" He told me to continue until I could turn around, come back to a certain intersection and turn right. I told him that this other police officer told me to do something different. His reply was, "Look, I have 16,000 cars coming out in a few minutes." Randy Downing Caffeyville senior Obviously, none of the police officers communicated with each other. There was absolutely no coordination between the three departments. This is not the first time that incidents like this have happened. It makes me wonder what they are doing with our tax dollars. In David Mitchell's editorial "Super-fan ban was unjustified," he said, "banning a fan that has devoted as much time to the Jayhawks as Zielinski has was an act of utter stupidity." Superfan did not play by the rules, deserves the ban As a few of the several thousand Jayhawk fans who are as loyal to KU athletics as the self-appointed Captain Jayhawk, we feel that it was Zielinski's actions that were of utter stupidity. Unfortunately, Mitchell's blind support of Zielinski seems to suggest that University rules do not apply to those who wear basketballs on their heads. While we have respect for Zielinski's energetic support for KU, we cannot respect someone who places himself above the system. Zielsnik's reference to Allen Field House security as "the little neon pink guys" is another example of his disrespect for the field house and its personnel. Mitchell's support for the double standard to which Zielsnik holds himself merely caters to Zielsnik's overestimated self-worth. Zielsnik said his expulsion "would be a big Sorry Joe and Dave, the focus is the game too. Jay Lewis ■ Jay Lewis Prairie Village senior ■ Corey Rittmaster Overland Park junior ■ Brian Schwartz Denver somhomore Martino has the superego to slam Captain Jayhawk Supergeo' Stephen Martino showed his ignorance in his Feb. 3 editorial. By making reference to Joe Zielniks as "The man they refer to as 'Captain Jayhawk' and 'Superfan'," Mr. Martino made it clear that he has no personal knowledge of Joe or his character. Despite his obviously limited knowledge base, Mr. Martine feels he knows enough about Joe to proclaim that Joe has "The world's most bledated ego of himself". It appears that Mr. Martino has a bloated ego concerning his ability to judge character. In addition, perhaps Mr. Martino should learn a bit more about how other KU basketball fans feel about Joe before he passes judgment. For instance, Stephen, you call Joe the "self-appointed god" of the fans. Do you think he throws himself into the air during the "Hey" chant? Oh no, that's the job of his "followers." Right? Give me a break! Joe is recognized by literally thousands of KU students and graduates as an unofficial mascot of the men's basketball team He is also a friend of many players, both past and present. Oh, and the Crimson Girls that he drove home, many of them know him personally as well. So you see, the "they" to which you refer, the "they" who gave Joe his title, are the players, the fans and others who support KU basketball. He tries to make the game fun for others as well as himself. Yes, he broke a rule, but it was all in the name of good fun. Perhaps if you knew Joe you would understand this. Unfortunately, you seem more concerned with the recognition given to Joe and the lack of recognition that your dedicated friends receive than with the accuracy of your character judgments. Who's whining now? If you want so badly for your friends to receive "credit for their commitment to Jayhawk basketball." tell them to do something about it. Get the friend who "weighs a buck-five" a cape. The friends who wanted to drive the Crimson Girls home should try again at this year's Final Four. And you, if you can find a basketball large enough to hold your head (with its wealth of knowledge about KU fans and "Superfans"), put a wrap on it and get flying. Maybe such actions will get you the attention that you so desire, but I guarantee that if you are an egomaniac you will never rise to "Superfan" status. To be a "Superfan," you must love the game more than yourself. Joe does. Tricia Barr Fort Scott senior ALL THE BEST VALENTINE'S DAY STUFF IS CHEAPER AT CHECKERS!
