SPORTS UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Tuesday. February 9. 1993 7 Women to return favor in Iowa tonight Jayhawks to take on Panthers By Jay Williams Kansan staffwriter Tonight's nonconference game against Northern Iowa will be payback time for the Kansas women's basketball team. The Panthers, 7-11 overall and 2-8 in the Missouri Valley Conference, played last year in Allen Field House, losing 82-34. Kansas returns the favor by playing in the UNI-Dome as part of an agreement between the two schools. The game is the third of five in seven days. Kansas, 12-7 and 5-4 in the Big Eight Conference, will sandwich the game between home conference games against Colorado and Missouri last weekend and road games at Iowa State and Nebraska this weekend. Junior center Lisa Tate said the team would be ready to play tonight, although the game meant nothing in terms of the conference race. "We just need to play and not worry about what's going on the day before or the the day after," she said. Tate also said the game gave the *say- hawks a chance to get their compo- niture back after Friday's 77-60 loss to No. 5 Colorado. Kansas led by nine pointers early, but turnovers and poor pointing allowed the Lady Buffs to blow away Kansas in the second half. Kansas rebounded Sunday by beating Missouri 62-52. Kansas coach Marian Washington said that this week would be a tough one for the team. The game was scheduled late in the season because of a new NCAA rule prohibiting teams from playing before Dec. 1. Kansas will play a total of three nonconference games during the conference season. "It's really tough getting 13 nonconference games in this year. "Washing- Despite having only one day to prepare, Washington said the team would be ready tonight. The Jayhawks received a scouting report following Sunday's game, had a light practice yesterday and then left for Cedar Falls by bus. "The players will know the Northern Iowa team and their offense," she said. Kansas paid back another road game this season at Kentucky, losing 71-61 Dec. 31. The Kentucky game came during another tough stretch of road contests. "I am hoping we handle this better than previous outings," Washington said. Northern Iowa has improved on last season's 4-23 mark. The team beat Big Eight member Iowa State 68-50. The team's have four common opponents: UMKC, Kansas State, Iowa State and Southwest Missouri State. Kansas is 5-0 against the common opponents while Northern Iowa is 1-3. Panther senior guard Ann Miller leads Northern Iowa averaging 15.2 points a game and also leads the team in steals and assists. Junior forward Julia Street leads the Panthers in rebounding with 7.2 a game. Tonight the Jayhawks travel to Northern Iowa for a nonconference game. By Matt Doyle Kansan sportswriter Senior swimmer Tim Corzine warms up for practice by swimming laps. Corzine has steadily improved since last season. Such was the case following last year's season opening 138-99 loss at Southern Methodist. Corzine finished the 200-yard backstroke in 1:58, which did not please Kemmf. Kansas senior swimmer Tim Corzine knows that if he does not perform his best in competition that Coach Gary Kempf will be waiting to talk with him. "On the way back home, Gary got on me about my performance and presented it to the whole team," Corzine said. "I was mad at him about that, but it helped me turn around my season last year." Corzine learned from his poor performance and has been more consistent for the No.20 Javahaws "Trimmy is having a good year," Kempf said. "He has been much more consistent and assertive this year than he has in the past." After the performance at Southern Methodist last year, Corzine was consistently swimming the 200 backstroke around the 1.54 mark with a season best 1.51.82 at the Big Eight Championships, where he earned third place. This season Corzine has continued last year's pace. He redeemed himself against Southern Methodist by turning in a season-best time of 152.57. "I didn't win race against SMU, but my time was much better," he said. "I was right with them throughout the race, and that presence of knowing that I'm with them shows that I can compete on this level." In the meet against Iowa State on Jan. 30, Corzine was the only Jyahawk men's swimmer to finish second to a Cyclone. Sophomore Jim Zenk best corzine in the 200 backstroke by two seconds, a fact that did not sit too well with Corzine or Kempf. "I had a problem becoming emotionally involved with that meet," Corzine said. "He swam his best time of the season, and I was off. I just didn't "We have an honest relationship," Kempfsaid. "If things aren't going too well, then we'll sit down and talk about life." "He didn't swim well against Iowa State," he said. "He wasn't aggressive in his swimming. I knew that, and he knew that." Kempf also said that in the future he could not be afraid to tell Corzine that he was a liar. Kempf told Corzine that he should not have lost to Zenk. comeback at the end as I thought I could." Tubbs stays true to his predictions The Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Billy Tubbs is not claiming he was misquoted when he said Oklahoma will "beat the hell" out of Kansas State — just misunderstood. "Beating the hell out of them would be like three points," the sarcastic Oklahoma coach said yesterday during the Big Eight Conference's telephone press conference. "We haven't distinguished what beating the hell out of them means." Tubbs made headlines last week with his bold prediction following Kansas State's 62-61 victory in Manhattan. Asked, "How good is Kansas State?" Tubbs shot back: "We'll beat the hell out of them in Norman. You mark that down. I don't give a damn how good they are." The Sooners play host to the Wildcats, the Big Eight's most improved team, on Feb. 23. Responding to most questions with sarcasm yesterday, Tubbs nevertheless said, "Yep," when asked if he still predicts an Oklahoma victory. "I just think we'll beat them," he said. "I thought we should have beaten them up there. They deserved the game. They won it. We had an opportunity, and we blew it. "Let's be blunt. I think if we have the same opportunity, we'll deliver. I thought the question I responded to was like a couple of questions I've got here this morning, kind of immaterial. if questions've got here this morning, kind of human which I still think we'll beat them." Kansas State coach Dana Altman has adopted an even-tempered attitude about it all. "I'm not sure what Billy was thinking. Altman said. "I consider us to be pretty good friends. I think he has respect for our team. Before the game he spoke very highly of our players." Oklahoma's 2-4 record puts them in seven place in the Big Eight, just ahead of Colorado. The Sooners are 14-7 overall. Kansas State had a chance to tie Kansas for first place in the conference last night at Missouri, but lost to the Tigers. The Wildcats dropped to 14-4 overall and 4-2 in the conference. Kansas holds sole possession of first place at 18-3 and 5-1.
