10 Monday, February 8, 1993 SPORTS UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Two athletes set records during weekend meet By Brady Prauser Kansan sportswriter Kansan sportswriter Although senior high jumper MaryBeth Labosky soared to new heights Saturday in her event, she said breaking the Kansas women's indoor high jump record was not as important as qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships. At the Jayhawk Invitational track meet in Anschutz Sports Pavilion, Labosky leaped 6% to break her own record by three-fourths of an inch. The jump satisfies the NCAA provisional qualifying mark for the indoor national championships at Indianapolis in March. High jumpers who leap 6-1/4 or higher are automatic qualifiers for nationals. If there are not enough automatic qualifiers, the highest-jumping provisional qualifiers go to nationals. Labosky said being a provisional qualifier gave her confidence that she later could become an automatic qualifier, and that going to nationals was more important than her new Kansas high jump record. "The record isn't going to last forever," she said. "The memories of nationals will last longer than the record." Kansas track coach Gary Schwartz had similar thoughts. "She has been flirting with a breakthrough," Schwartz said. "It's great she go the record, but she is going to jump much higher." Labosky's Kansas record was not the only one set Saturday. Sophomore spinner Natasha Shafer ran the women's 55-meter dash in 6.97 seconds to break her own school record. She also won the 300-yard dash in 36.21. Shafer's time also makes her a provisional qualifier for nationalists. Other winners for the Kansas women were Cheryl Evers with a 47-5 shot put throw, and Cassandra Bryant-Wans with a 40% leap in the triple jump. For the Kansas men's team, junior David Johnston's 4.15-19 time in the mile run was the only individual victory. Johnston used a strong kick inside the last 60 meters to win the race. However, Schwartz said that when he was watching Johnston's race Saturday, he was worried Johnston waited too long to start his kick. "When you do that, it's kind of like being a gunfigher," Schwartz said. "There may be someone with a faster gun. There may be someone with a faster kick." Former player gives back to kids Eleven year-old Kim Ray dreams of becoming a Kansas softball star. By Mark Button Kansan sportswriter With the help of former Jayhawk Shelly Sack, her dream could become reality. day is one of nine youths who comes to Countryside Intermediate School in DeSoto every Wednesday night to attend Sack's pitching clinic. Sack, who will receive her degree in therapeutic recreation in May, was a four-year starter at Kansas. She played an integral part in taking the 1992 team to the College World Series, where it finished seventh. sack started all four years at first base, and Kansas coach Kalum Haack said he play during her senior year was one reason for the Jaya-hawks 'best defensive team in team history. Her pitching ability made it possible for Haack to put her in the pitching rotation when needed. This versatility was important because it allowed Haack to rest the other pitchers at key junctures of the season. Haack said this season's success greatly depended on the team's ability to compete without Sack. "Now that it's nice out, I miss it," she said. "That's partly why I got into the pitching — it keeps me into softball." Sack said she missed being involved in Kansas softball, especially now that spring was near. Last fall, Sack began helping the daughter of her friend, Diane Lynne, and three other girls with their pitching techniques. The word of Sack's voluntary coaching soon spread to Lynn's friend and DeSoto girls softball coach, Bill Fletcher. Fletcher, who coaches both the DeSoto Bells' 10-year-old and 12-year-old teams, asked Sack if she would hold a clinic once a week for the pitchers on his team. Sack said she thought the idea was great and agreed to hold the clinics. The first clinic took place around Thanksgiving last year. Sack said she was happy to give back the knowledge that she once received in clinics much like the one she now runs. "I remember going to softball camps when I was eight," Sack said. "They charged a dollar a day." "She is the best instructor I've seen," Fletcher said. "She has great patience and works well with the kids one-on-one." Fletcher said he and the girls considered themselves fortunate to benefit from Sack's experience. Fletcher and his girls received an added bonus in John Burn, Sack's fiance, who helps with the clinic. Burn pitched for the Kansas baseball team in 1986 and 1987 and now plays for the Maupintour Travelers, a semi-pro team. Burn said seeing the smiles on the girls' faces and feeling their excitement gave him a sense of accomplishment. Sack said she enjoyed working with girls, but wouldn't want to make a career out of coaching. "I just like seeing the girls have fun with softball," she said. "But I don't want to get into a real competitive situation." Sack also works as an intern at Meadowbrook Rehabilitation Hospital in Gardner, Kan. She and Burn will be married in September in her hometown of North Platte, Neb. Henne Moulder?
