Lack of parking spaces still poses problems for Daisy Hill residents By Will Lewis Kansan staff writer Courtney Grove will never have to worry about finding a parking space at McCollum Hall again. Grover, Springfield, Mo., freshman, sold her 1989 Honda Prelude last fall because she was fed up with unsuccessfully hunting for a nearby space. "I took my car home, and I sold it because you cannot have a car here and park anywhere," she said. Last fall, Lot 106, the parking lot west of the bridge on Irving Hill Road, was chained off after construction began on the Lied Center. The gravel lot, better known as East Topeka to many Daisy Hill residents, provided overflow parking mainly for students living in Ellsworth and McColum halls. Templin halls' lots, which are on the north side of the Daisy Hill area. An Office of Facilities Planning survey showed that the West Campus lot was unnecessary. Now, students who cannot find a space near those halls use Lewis and Donna Hultine, assistant director of parking, said that there were sufficient parking spaces on Daisy Hill without the lot on West Campus, but that students living in Ellsworth and McCollum had to walk farther. Grove said she thought it was unsafe to walk across Daisy Hill at night after parking her car. "I would come home at two in the morning and walk all by myself from Lewis," she said. "I wouldn't have bought my car in the first place if had known there wasn't sufficient parking." Mike Andrews, Topeka sophomore who lives in Ellsworth, said close parking spaces were hardest to find on Sunday nights. "On Sunday nights, when everyone's here, you've got to park at Lewis." Andrews said. He said that although it was easy to find a parking space at Lewis, the parking at the West Campus lot was Courtney Grove Springfield, Mo., freshman Don Kearns, director of parking, said parking was not a problem because the number of people in the residence halls was decreasing. much closer. "If the occupancy goes up, we'll probably allow them to park in the Lied Center parking lot." Kearns said.
