It was nearly impossible not to hear the talk: "leaked memo, Dean Jerry, Washburn law." student from Hays, said she had heard a lot of talk at the school yesterday but did not think that students were worried about the memo. Nearly everyone was talking about the Nov. 30 memo written by Robert Jerry, dean of law, to Del Brinkman, vice chancellor for academic affairs. The memo, which was leaked to the press Wednesday, called Washburn's law school low-quality and criticized state financing for the KU law school. Only a few students wanted to talk publicly about the memo. Many who wouldn't talk said they had their own interests to look after. "People are more worried about trying to make their way, get a job and make a decent living," she said. Stacey Schumacher, third-year law Glenn Brown, second year law student from Shawnee, agreed with Schumacher's assessment but had some complaints about the leak "In a memoir to your boss, you can say a lot of things that aren't politically correct, but it's unfair that something like that is taken out of context," Brown said. *If you believe that, this school is doing very well," he said. Many faculty members at the law school would not comment about the memo. Philip Kissam, professor of law, said that he did not agree with the memo's content and that he liked and respected Washburn faculty. He said students would not be harmed by the memo's release. "law firm are interested in what students learn," he said. "Political problems at KU won't affect students' chances of getting jobs." "He's just doing his job. Maybe he's overzealous," Patterson said. "It won't have a long-term effect, but the short-term effect is embarrassing." Statements draw criticism from Washburn By Will Lewis Randall Patterson, third-year law student from Wichita, said that Jerry might have gone too far but that he was just trying to protect Klaw. Kansan staff writer TOPEKA — Dean Robert Jerry's memo was the hot topic of discussion yesterday in the student lounge and administrative offices of Washburn University's law school. The memo, which was leaked to the press Wednesday, called Washburn's law school low-quality and criticized state financing for the KU law school. The memo has created tension between the Topeka university and the University of Kansas, said Allen Easley, associate dean of Washburn's law school. "I think the most damaging part of that memo is that it seems so clearly to argue that KU's advancement is dependent on hurting Washburn's law school," Easley said. John Kuether, a law professor at Washburn, said the memo's statements that Washburn's law school was lower in quality than the University's was a matter of opinion. "I just think it is importante that the administration of that law school feels the only way they can improve their law school is by attempting to damage our law school," he said. "It doesn't make us any better if you are good or bad," he said, referring to KU's law school. "We are what we are. I don't see much in terms of tearing down somebody else to try to build your own reputation." Some law students at Washburn also had strong opinions about the memo. "The legal community has a hard enough time as it is with its reputation," said lay Lang, first year law stu dent. "For professional people to be making comments like that just degrades the profession." Other law students at Washburn said they were surprised that a dean would issue such a memo. "Had the memo even been true, I think it's shocking that the dean of a law school resorts to that kind of communication," said Heather Brantley Cowell, second-year law student. "It just shows really badly on the students." Barb Peterson, a third-year law student, said she thought Jerry was overly upset when he wrote the memo. "I get the impression that he was lying on the floor, red-faced, pounding his feet and fists against the floor and crying while dictating it," she said.
