+3 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Friday, January 22, 1993 5 KU already meets some of act's guidelines By Will Lewis Kansan staff write Because of much effort in the last 20 years in accommodating students with disabilities, the University of Kansas does not have far to go to bring its buildings into compliance with the new Americans with Disabilities Act, University officials say. The act was approved in 1990 to eliminate discrimination against individuals with disabilities. "We've been doing a lot all along to make the facilities more accessible," said Allen Wiechert, University director of facilities planning. He said all permanent buildings on campus were considered program accessible. This means all persons with disabilities have access to restrooms, classrooms and elevators. But some changes still have to be made to comply with the act, he said. The University soon will install visual fire alarms, modify drinking fountains and place braille signs next to restrooms, stairs, elevators and classrooms — all of which are required by the act. Ken Stoner, director of student housing, said his department was doing its best to accommodate on-campus residents. Some apartments in Jayhawker Towers have been renovated to provide better access for disabled people, he said. Additional space and a larger turning radius will be added to a building at Stouffer Place Apartments for those who use wheelchairs. Last fall, the University opened Amini Scholarship Hall, which was designed to provide complete accessibility. Pearson Scholarship Hall was renovated five years ago with better accessibility. Stoner said the two buildings would be able to accommodate 15 students who used wheelchairs. "As we do renovations,we will bring all buildings up to ADA standards,"he said. The Daisy Hill Dining Commons, an extension of Lewis Hall, is scheduled to open in the fall and serve all five residence halls on Daisy Hill. The cafeteria will have its own entrance and provide ramps to make all levels accessible. Wiechert said the University would continue to improve accessibility for those with disabilities. "It will be an ongoing, continuing program," he said. "Every year, we will make more facilities accessible." The Americans with Disabilities Act Target areas for compliance in schools, businesses and public places Braille must be provided to identify room numbers and buttons on elevators. MEN Ramps must be provided to aid in accessing buildings. Aisles in stores must be made wide enough for wheelchairs to move freely. RESTROOM ACCESS Restroom stalls must have at least a five-foot diameter to allow wheelchairs to turn. Office desks must be tall enough for wheelchairs to fit underneath. Hotels must provide televisions with closed captioning. IN THE WORKPLACE RESTROOM ACCESS Doorways must have a minimum width of 32 inches. IN THE WORKPLACE Technology aiding the hearing and visually impaired must be installed. Examples: • Visual aids augmenting aural fire alarms to aid the hearing impaired. • Audio aids attached to computer equipment to aid the visually impaired. Drinking fountains must be low enough for wheelchairs to easily access, and insulation should be put on exposed pipes.
