Mrs. Carrie Lane Chapman-Catt, a Pi Beta Phi from Iowa State University has been in the city the last few days attending the suffrage convention. Mrs. Catt has been a prominent worker in the woman's suffrage movement for a number of years.
There is a movement on foot in the English universities to render their post-graduate research departments more popular among foreign students. The reason that these universities are not more popular among advanced American students is because they have no post-graduate work in the American sense of the term. The "Tripos" system at Cambridge of dividing all men into three classes of honor at the final examinations, demands most severe work with a coach for a long succession of years, and after the final examination upon the success or failure in which depends the whole work in the previous years there is nothing to do but to coach others, or begin independent research work. —Harvard Crimson.
HUMBLE PIE IS BETTER THAN NO PIE AT ALL.
We took notice on last May day, though the Freshman flag by mistake hung over the Juniors, that the Junior flag was too high for the poor Seniors to reach and the way they bowed down and rolled in the dust beneath the flag looked as if they worshiped it.
The Juniors' hearts go out in sympathy for the poor Seniors who have not as a class been successful in anything since entering the U. We hope the play to be given by them in the near future will be an exception to this rule.
UNIVERSITY MUSICAL FESTIVAL.
From the present outlook Lawrence will be treated to an average of two musicales a week during the month of May. The "Redemption," which has just been given with such wonderful success, makes a good start for the month. The next event will be the appearance of the great Scharwenka. He requires a $200 guarantee. If the Lawrence people turn out as they have heretofore when a great artist comes, he will have a good crowd. He will give two concerts, next Saturday afternoon and evening, and will be assisted by Mrs. Nannie Hands Kronberg, of Kansas City.
On Monday evening Miss Ellen Beech Yaw will give a concert. She is a young California girl who has created a perfect furore in New York, Boston and in Europe with a voice greater in compass than that of any artist the world has ever known. She sings lower than most altos, and one octave and a half above high C. Her voice has had skillful training in Paris, and she brings a concert company with her.
It will not be long until the faculty concerts and the commencement concerts, of which the school of fine arts will have two this year, will be given.
AN ELEGANT PARTY.
Again the Thetas surpassed their record as elegant entertainers. Fraternal Aid hall was decorated in a most elegant manner last Friday evening with beautiful flowers and choicest parlor furniture and portieres.
The first part of the evening was given to a reception. Those who danced could hardly wait to take advantage of the beautiful music given by the Leavenworth orchestra. The reception committee and ushers did excellent work in giving everyone a royal welcome. The reception committee was composed of Mesdames Hodder and Pierson and Maud Smeltzer.
The young ladies never looked more beautiful than did they this evening. The out of town guests present were: Misses Miller, Blaker, Alden and Bigger, all of Kansas City, Kans.; Misses Richardson and Baird, of Kansas City, Mo.; Misses Hale, McClintic and Dienst of Topeka; Miss Annie Wilder of Lincoln, Neb.; Misses Shiras, Barret, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dobson of Ottawa, and Miss Maggie Smith of Mound City. Among some of the out of town gentlemen there were Ernest Blaker, Cliff Crow, Osborn VanBrunt, Ed Elliston and Philip Drought of Kansas City; Messrs Hopkins, Clay, Kingsley, and Dennis of Topeka; Jimmie Canfield, Jr., of Lincoln Neb.; Adrian Sherman, and Fred Diggs.
