FRIDAY, AUGUST 4, 1939 SUMMER SESSION KANSAN Survey to Make Topographic Map ★ Field Work Completed In Parts of Greenwood And Elk Counties Accurate topographic maps which also will show configuration of the surface are being made by the Kansas Geological Survey working in co-operation with the United States Geological Survey and the WPA, according to Kenneth K. Landis, state geologist and professor at the University of Kansas. Already field work has been completed in southeastern Greenwood county and the northeast corner of Elk county, and maps of the area are being prepared for printing. In Sedgwick county a topographic map is being made of an area which includes the city of Wichita, extending from a line a short distance north of Valley Center south almost to the Sumner county line. Aerial photographs are being used to aid in the mapping of this area. Workers are establishing elevations now in areas which include the western two-thirds of Leavenworth county, most of Doniphan county, all of Jefferson, Atchison, and Brown counties, the eastern one-half of Nemaha county, most of Jackson and Shawnee counties, and the northern three-fourths of Osage county in preparation for future mapping. All of the recreational facilities under the direction of Dr. Forrest C. Allen this summer will remain open through next Tuesday, Aug. 8, for the pleasure of the Summer Session students and faculty. The playground will be open Friday, Monday and Tuesday evenings from 7 to 8:30; the regular swimming pool schedule will be followed Friday, Saturday, Mon- and Tuesday; and the driving range will be open Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8 o'clock. School Teaching--- (Continued from page one) Some Stay At Home About one-fourth of the teachers stay at home during the school year, because it was cheaper, and many admitted on a questionnaire that their parents never charged them board and room rent. In the other three-fourths, the average board and room expense for the school term was $175. Clothing cost $88. "Dad" also fills the gas tank for some teachers, it was found. Others figure it costs them about $1 a week for gasoline. One-third of the teachers carry no life insurance, and spend an average of $20 annually for recreation. That's about one good show a week. The surprising thing about it all is that the average teacher has been doing this for more than six years, the survey shows, and the average school teacher is lucky, Garrett found to have $100 to last her through the summer, study at some college summer session, or get ready for another eight-month salary at an average of $65 a month. Yet, be it said to their credit, there are teachers in this University Summer Session, who will go back to schools like these, at wages like these, and toil longer hours and do more sincere constructive work than many whose salaries are three times that sum. The wonder is, why do they do it? There are some things in life worth dying for -- but the traffic right of way is not one of them.
