After a few minutes the passengers of the Baltic were calmed and a brief investigation showed the extent of the damage and the narrowness of their escape. The action of the helmsman in partly bringing the ship around had saved their lives, for by reason of this the other ship had struck only a glancing blow which had caused serious but not fatal damage. If the collision had taken place at right angles, the Baltic undoubtedly would have been cut in two and probably not one of her passengers would have escaped. While they are acquiring knowledge it would be a good idea for these youngsters to acquire good manners also.
