--- SPORTS Cross country teams, runners fail to qualify for NCAA tournament By JANELLE MARTIN Sports Writer The KU women's cross country team finished eighth out of 10 teams in the NCAA District V Cross Country Championships in Ames, Iowa, Saturday. Two runners on the men's team also competed for individual berths in the NCAA Championships in Bethehem, Pa. But the season ended for both squads as neither team had any individuals place high enough to qualify. The Collegiate Athletic Association meet. A cold front that moved through the state would force air to be run in unfavorable conditions. The overall championship winner was the host school, Iowa State University, which won the men's and women's divisions. University Daily Kansan, November 14, 1983 "It WAS 30 DEGREES and windy when we ran," said women's coach Hilf Roveltol. "There was about 1 inch of ground and snowing when we ran." in the team standings, KU's first finish was freshman Cindy Blakeley with 26 points. 15 seconds. She was followed by junior Susan Glatter, 33rd, 19:08; sophomore Caryne Finlay, 40th, 19:20; freshman Tracy Keach, 42nd, 19:27; junior Paula Bernquist, 51st, 19:55; junior Heather Bsterben, 52nd, 20:36. Berquist, one of KU's top runners this season, was hampered by a fall in the middle of the race. In order to qualify for NCAA nationalists, KU needed to win the meet as a team. Individually, a runner had to place in the top three. "We can't be disappointed." Rovello said. "We ended the season on a good note. Caryne and Tracy each had good efforts. Everyone ran well." Leibert finished in 16th place with a time of 32:14.6. Gundy's time of 32:23 placed him 22nd. IN THE MEN'S/DIALY KU did not compete as a team but seniors Tim Wesley and Andrew Porter Head coach Bob Timmons said all the runners had difficulty with footing on the course. Timmons said last week that the decision not to take the entire men's team was made after its lead runner, Randy Jones, broke his knee and was unable to run. McEnroe wins Grand Prix in straight sets By United Press International LONDON — Feisty New Yorker John McEroe raced to a straight sets victory over Jimmy Connors, who seemed to lose some spirit following a loss in swearing in yesterday's all-American game $135,000 Grand Prix tennis tournament. McEnroe coasted to a 7-5, 6-1, 4-1 victory in 1 hour 15 minutes to win the title for the fifth time in six years, but this match between the world's top two players died in the 11th game when umpire Ian Stirk warned Connors for an audible obscenity at a packed Wembley Arena. The 31-year-old U.S. Open champion had a further $750 added to the $1,000 in fines he received Wednesday, but though his considerable bank balance can stand the loss, his passion for the game could not. Sirk then warned him for a code of conduct violation and Connors changed from overdrive into reverse as he went on to lose the game and then drop his wrist in the next as McKenna wrapped up the opening set in 32 minutes. title, showed some consideration for his beaten opponent. "It is too bad something like that has to “happen,” the McEnroe said. "Jimmy always gives his best — 110 percent. But it was obvious he lost his concentration and was distracted. He could not get past the second set and never recovered." it with a stunning smash that caused Connors to swear in frustration. The second set was strictly one-way with McEnroe in command after taking a 3-0 lead against a plainly disprited Comorns. But Connors, who held a 12-10 head-to-head edge over his opponent coming into yesterday's clash, clawed his way back into the match, taking Connors' five double fouls to break back on ninth game and then draw even at 5-3. McEnroe said he thought the code of conduct needed to be looked into because interpretations differed from tournament to tournament. The two southpaws treated the crowd of 9,000 to some dazzling rallies in their netting. The netting, forced forehand volley gave Gavin sons a win. Wimbledon champion McEnevin saved Connors, who overturned a two set deficit to defeat McEnroe in the 1983 final, managed to provide stiffer resistance in the third, but he never really threatened to change the tide of events. McEnroe refused to release his stranglehold and finished in style with a love game after reeling off 11 consecutive points. The final was shaping up to expectations before the swearing incident, with defending champion McEnroe drawing first blood by breaking Cnnors for a 3-1 lead and then holding his service in the next game. McEnroe, while happy to regain his An aggrieved Connors commented, "The match was boring. These officials are taking all the joy, fun and excitement out of the game for the players and the spectators. I don't need all this hassle with the officials. If I was going to win, I'd probably old now. I have had enough of it and will probably just concentrate on the U.S. Open and Wimbledon if it goes on. They will run me off the Grand Prix circuit."
