University Daily Kansan, August 31, 1983 Page 9 City to use new energy system By JOHN HOOGESTEGER Staff Reporter Douglas County officials last week found out how much the county was saving on electric bills with a new energy system, and the figures have prompted city officials to get in on the act. In February, the county installed a computerized energy management system in the Douglas County Courthouse and the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center, both at 111 E. 11th St. Last week the County Commission heard a report on the savings from Fremont Hornberger, county maintenance manager at the city hall, as much was being saved as expected. That report prompted city officials to decide to tie three of four city buildings to a bridge. ACCORDING TO CITY Manager Bulford Watson, the city will be adding City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets, to the system along with the central maintenance garage, 1140 Haskell Ave., the Community Building, 115 W. 11th St., and possibly Fire Station No. 1, and the Senior Center, which are in the same building at 745 Vermont St. Watson said he expected the buildings to be connected to the computer by Oct. 1. By tying into the existing system, the city will save money on installation costs in addition to the electricity savings. The city is spending about $15,900 on installation, but Watson said city officials expected to save about $10,000 a year on electricity. The computer, which is operated by Hornberger, saves money by keeping energy usage down. Energy used during peak energy use is saved as much energy used at other times, and the computer is programmed to keep peak energy use down. THE COMPUTER ALSO enables Harbinger to program energy savings for holidays and evening hours. "The air cycling used to run all day. But now if it can be shut down for half an hour, it will be shut down," he said. "We can program it to keep a room warm for an evening meeting and then to let it cool down afterward." to let Cate Cook in. Sometimes in the next few days he will be programming the buildings for the Labor Day holiday. The county saved about $11,000 in the first six months the system was in operation. Hornberger said, despite a 29percent increase in the electric rate this year by the Kansas Power and Light Co. The company that installed the system, Johnson Controls of Kansas City, Kan., estimated that with no rate increase the county would have saved $26,000. THE COUNTY COMMISSION originally expected that the $44,000 computer system would pay for itself in two years. The computer system to be paid off in a year, he said. Hornberger said the monthly electric bill at the law enforcement center dropped from about $12,500 to about $8,000 a month. The county is putting $16,000 into hooking up the Valleyview Nursing Home, 2518 Ridge Court, which the county operates, to the computer. The home should be connected to the system within 30 days. Hornberger said that addition should pay for itself in 20 months. Horberg said he had not had any maintenance problems. "I haven't had a minute's trouble with it," he said. "It's a working out real well. I studied it for about six months, but it didn't affect that much saving was even possible." HORNBERGER IS NOT worried about the system being filled up because it can handle up to 19 buildings. Both Watson and Hornberger said they planned to look into adding even more buildings to the system. County buildings under consideration include buildings owned by the Douglas County Health Department and buildings at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. The city is considering adding a building at South Park. TRIPLE X-RATED EXOTIC FEMALE DANCERS Dancing from 9 p.m. to Midnite No Cover Charge The 4 WINDS CLUB A Private Club 1904 Mass.
