University Daily Kansan, August 31, 1983 Page 7 Coalitions register as election nears By the Kansan staff Student Senate elections won't take place until November, but two groups have already started preparing for the election by registering as official student organizations. Art Farmer, director of the office of student organizations and activities, said that two coalitions, Identity and Priority, had registered at the office. A coalition does not have to register in the office to run in the November election, said Amy Husband, president and treasurer for the Priority coalition. A registered group can use the name of the University, reserve the campus information booth in front of Stauffer Flint Hall and use the campus notice. A registered group can also obtain free meeting space on campus. "Many independents don't register with the office," Farmer said. "You don't have to be registered to stand in front of the Union and hand out literature, as long as you don't impede traffic." Although the two coalitions have registered, at least one of the groups is still organized, say members of the Priority coalition. "We're in the organizing stage," Welling said. "So far we have about 30 members and we want to pick up a few more." DO SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE, TOO FEAR HONEST ENDEAVOR? Soon after emerging from my subterranean lair, someone not always good-natured reminds me of my failure, i.e., I'm unemployed, in our fabled free enterprise system. My fear of honest endeavor is so pronounced that I find even superficial contact with successful people stressful. This culturally-induced condition leaves me unable to appreciate, for instance, video arcades, gambling casinos, television programs, trashy tabloids, rock music, pornographic publications and prostitution's panders. When I work up sufficient courage to suggest respectfully to a societal superior, i.e. an employed person, that perhaps the fact that our schools often fail to inform, our nursing homes often fail to care, our judiciary often fails to uphold, our doctors often fail to protect and our institutions often fail to restrain indicates that some work is being left undone, I'm haughtily told that my failure in the system renders invalid my every pronouncement. my every pronouncement. The taxpayer public evidently doesn't wish to fund programs designed to counter our rising rates of unemployment, illiteracy, divorce, venereal disease, child abuse, juvenile delinquency and violent crime. Could this be because successful people, too, fear honest endeavor? William Dann William Dann 2704 W. 24th St. Terr.
