The most important tool is in store for the coming harvest. "There has been a large abandonment of groves," said Mark Carpenter, field manager for a Mission grove care firm. "Some people just hooked it and dropped it on the ground. Some people disk it in." The Texas Citrus Committee reports that bulbs inventing of grapefruit juice caused a 47 percent reduction in processed grapefruit during 1982-83, with 13,421 (7.1%) being compared with 12,688 (6.4%) 655.440 juices) a year ago. Spokesmen for Texasun Corp., a Royal Brown Cola subsidiary which produces rapetruit juice in the Valley, and for the Texas Citrus Exchange, which ships Big Teu juices, say the surplus will continue through the next harvest, which begins in about two months. "We have at least a year's supply and another season coming up in two months," said Cecil Peck, a Texsun official at Weslaco. "I THINK THE SITUATION will be the same through this year," and Clyde Wittie, Peck's counterpart at the Texas Exchange headquarters in Mission. Wittie blamed the situation on a worldwide glut of grape juice prompted by Florida's freezes two seasons ago, which caused large amounts of damaged fruit to be converted to juice. "Florida and California have a problem, and they have a (surplus) problem overseas." Wittie said. "We know the year, maybe a year and a half's supply." Carpenter has his grove-care firm also knew of several grapefruit or HE SAID THE juice surplus was forcing many growers to abandon orchards that were marginal producers and that might have gone out of production in two or three years anyway. chards that were simply being maintained without much hope of production this year, although unseasonably high rainfall in July had kept them healthier than expected. anyway. Prewitt said the abandoned groves, plus an anticipated 6,000 to 10,000 acres of citrus expected to be lost to encroachment of mobile home developments, could reduce the number of citrus trees in the valley significantly in coming years. Last year's grapefruit juice surplus was offset somewhat by a record sale of fresh grapefruit, the citrus committee reported. reported. Fresh grapefruit and orange shipments reached 19,550 carloads, the highest since 1947. "ASK has matured as a positive constructive force at the University of Kansas.
