SPORTS The University Daily KANSAN August 30,1983 Page 12 3 ex-KU stars earn medals at top meets Athletes' success in world games pleases coaches By JANELLE MARTIN Sports Writer Three former KU track stars have earned medals in world track and field competition this past month, and the track coaches at the University couldn't be more pleased. Cliff Wiley, a spinner at KU in the mid-1970s, won the gold medal in the 400 meters with a time of 45.02 seconds at the IX Pan American Games in Caracas, Venezuela, last week. Jeff Buckingham, a 1983 KU graduate, captured the silver medal in the pool vault with a leap of 1.24³. Tyke Peacock, form of KU basketball, won Big Eight Conference winner in the high jump, won the gold medal at the World University Games in Helsinki, Finland, earlier this month. THE KU TRACK coaches who coached these athletes were pleased with their progress since leaving the University. Bob Timmons, head track coach, said he was extremely proud of Wiley and his performance in the Pan Am Games. "Obviously, he's a very talented athlete," Timmons said. "He's always been a dedicated student, both as a student at the University and as a student of sprint running." Wiley is a 1983 graduate of the KU School of Law. Assistant track coach Roger Bowen coached, Buckingham. "I think Jeff's success in pole vaulting can be explained in two words: hard work," he said. Bowen said Buckingham worked out every day religiously by training with weights and watching films of techniques for improvements. PEACOCK, THE TOP high jumper in the world when he came to KU on a basketball scholarship, was coached by assistant Steve Kueffer. Kueffer said that while Peacock was only at the University a short time, one key to his success was that he could handle competition well. Peacock transferred to Fresno State at the beginning of last year. Coach Timmons said Wiley's were best if his eventual job with a law firm is located in a good training area. All three KU coaches think the people they coached have the abilities to do well at the Olympic trials this year in Colorado Springs, Colo. "It comes down to one day at the trials," Bowen said. "He has to remain healthy, but if he runs into bad weather a day it could be his advantage." Kuefer said Peacock's chances of making the Olympic squad were extremely high. Peacock's record at the University Games is only one-fourth of an inch short of the world record. "Before he came to KU he was ranked No. 1 in the world," Kueffer said, "and he's since improved." Nebraska offense downs Penn State Uniid Press Internationale Unitid Press Internationale Nebraska's All-America running back Mike Rozier breaks an attempted tackle by Penn State's Tim Johnson and gains first-down yardage in the first quarter. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Turner Gill and Nate Mason ran and passed for a touchdown apiece last night and led a Nebraska offensive explosion that keyed the No. 1 Cornhuskers' 44-6 blowout of No. 4 Penn State in the inaugural Kickoff Classic. Nebraska made it 27-0 when Mike Knox stepped in front of a Strang pass intended for Tony Muftlion and took it 27 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter. Dave Schneider, who kicked 4-of-5 extra-point attempts, kicked a 34-yard field goal late in the third quarter. Perry's pitching not enough to beat Baltimore By United Press International KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Royals start Gaylord Perry was a completely different pitcher in losing 9-2 Monday night to the Orioles compared to his most recent outing against Baltimore. Perry no-hit the Orioles for seven innings 10 days ago but didn't last two innings Monday in failing to 6-13 on the year as the Orioles won their sixth in a "Perry was a different pitcher when we saw him in Baltimore last time," said Oriole shortstop Cal Ripken. "He made an adjustment then, so tonight we made an adjustment, too." That adjustment showed up on the second hitter of the game when Dan Ford tripped high off the center-field wall. Ripkin followed with a home run and struck out three, helping the next pitch. The Orioles had two more hits in the inning but didn't score. However, Baltimore managed two more runs in the second with Al Bumby tripling and Ford, Ripkin and Eddie Murray hitting consecutive singles. They drove in two runs and knocked Nerney out of the game. "I hadn't had very much success against him before," Ripkin said. "I can't remember a lot of hits but I can remember a lot of strikeouts and a lot of frustration with the bases loaded. "In Baltimore he (Perry) got me out on a variety of breaking balls. This time I just decided he wasn't going to get me out with a breaking pitch." Scott McGregor, 16-5, allowed a run in the fifth when Leon Roberts hit his eighth home run of the season. John Shelby added a grand slam in a five-run ninth. eighth home. The Royals scored also in the eighth. Don Stallion got his second single of the game and went to third on a single by Butch Davis. One out later, U.L. Washington sent Seau home. Despite hand injury, Jones is still 'tough' By JEFF CRAVENS Associate Sports Editor Tough is an overused adjective describing the playing style of particular athletes during football season, so when coach Mike Gottfried talked about fullback E.J. Jones yesterday, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. It was a familiar statement about Jones, considering his reputation as a bone-crunching blocker in his three years at the University of Kansas. JONES IS SUFFERING from a little more than a sore hand. "E.J. hurt his hand, but he's tough and he'll roll with the punches and be out there," Guttried said about Jones. "We have to get them down in Northern Illinois University." "I found out this fall that I've been playing with a broken hand for two years," he said. "It's a small bone in my hand and it just showed up on the X-rays. It's bothered me some, but I always thought it was a bad sprain." Jones now wears a soft cast on his right hand. "Lately, I've been having trouble catching the ball," he said. "We have a couple of light days at the end of this week, so I'll be ready to play." Despite the hand injury, Jones is looking forward to his senior year. After spending two years as mainly a girl, she joined the band and handle the talk a little more this season. "I take a lot of pride in both my blocking and my running," he said. "I hope to get the ball a little more. If I get the ball, I know what I can capable of." AGAINST IOWA STATE last season, Jones showed what he could do when he gained 112 yards and scored two touchdowns on 15 carries. He ended last season as the team's second leading rusher. Lake all running backs, he credits his success to his offensive line. This year's line is the most experienced KU has had since Jones has been here. "I call them the bulls, and they pave the roads," he said. "I have a name for each like 'Highway 76' (Reggie Smith) and 'Route 72' (Renwick Atkins). They're so big and they have a lot of experience, so I just follow them. "When they start to click, that's when we'll start to click." The Jayhawk offense returns 11 players who started last season, and Jones thinks KU will be able to move the ball. They then upset that set the tone for the rest of the year." That experience has seen the Jayhawks go from a bowl-team to a lastplace team two years. Jones has also worked and thinks it will help KU this year. "I'm a pretty quiet guy," he said. "The guys elected me and I have to come forth and represent the players.
