Page 8 University Daily Kansan, August 30, $198^{2}$ Power at Watkins is restored after transformer malfunction By PAUL SEVART Staff Reporter electric power was fully restored yesterday afternoon at Watkins Memorial Hospital after a malfunction and fire late Saturday in a transformer forced the hospital to make do with only emergency power. A facilities operations official said that no accurate cost estimate was possible. But the cost of repairing the damaged transformer and rent on three temporary replacement transformers could be more than $20,000. The official, Robert Porter, associate director of the physical plant for facilities operations, said that power was restored at 4:25 p.m. yesterday after three transformers borrowed from the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities were installed temporarily in the hospital basement. JAMES STROBL, acting director of the hospital, said yesterday that the hospital's emergency generator activated automatically when the transformer failed at 10:50 p.m. Saturday. It provided power to the cooling tanks and as refrigerators in the kitchen and pharmacy and lights in the emergency room and some other areas. but the air conditioning and many of the overhead lights were not on the emergency line, so employees and patients had to live with the heat and dim light. Several large fans kept the air moving, but it was nonetheless hot. One inconvenience caused by the outage, Strobil said, was that no X-ray patient who wanted X-rays was sent to a private doctor's office, he said. Porter said he helped extinguish the fire, which was confined to the transformer and caused no outside damage. He found him that man with hospital's power was off. "The room was two-thirds full of smoke." Porter said. "The core was smoldering. There were no flames, but it was hot enough to glow red on the wall." THE POWER had gone off about 5 p.m. Saturday, Porter said. He examined the transformer then and reenergized it, but it failed again later that evening. The cause of the malfunction was not known, but about 10 years old, and about 20 to 30 years is a reasonable life expectancy. Richard Perkins, associate director of utilities for facilities operations, said crews spent all Sunday removing the 5-foot, 5,000-pound transformer core and putting the three temporary replacement transformers in place. Porter said four or five facilities operations employees worked from 6:30 a.m. until late afternoon yesterday to hook up the transformers. Gary Smith/KANSAN "It just takes time because of the magnitude of the job," Perkins said. Jerry Henley and Raymond Patterson, both electricians for KU Facilities Operations, work to connect a temporary power generator in the basement of Watkins Hospital during repairs yesterday. Tammy Choice, 21, of Manhattan, leaped about 11:20 a.m. from the roof of a housing complex known as Westbeth, police said. By United Press International Authorities had searched for Choice since Sunday afternoon when she allegedly hurled her little girl, Sherry Jackson, from a 22 foot high retaining wall onto the Henry Hudson Parkway. She was shot and purple shorts, was spotted by a motorist as she fell onto the highway's right lane, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene and was identified by her husband, Larkin Jackson, also of Manhattan, police said. The man, who asked to remain anonymous, screeched to a halt and pulled the child to safety just as a stroller came flying over the wall, police said. The child was in stable condition yesterday with multiple fractures, said a spokeswoman at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. Jackson had come to the hospital and identified Sherry, the Choice. The spokeswoman said. The detective said Choice was wearing two separate sets of clothes when she jumped to her death and had been seen wandering the neighborhood's streets and talking in coobertly shortly before her body was found. Inspector John Hill of the Manhattan detective unit said authorities believed Choice, who disappeared after the incident, may have suffered a mental collapse.
