--- SPORTS The University Daily KANSAN August 29,1983 Page 16 Ex-pro to be named to vacant staff post Ed Manning, who played in both the National and American Basketball Associations, apparently will be hired by the KU basketball coach Larry Brown. Brown has indicated Manning will be part of the staff, said KU Sports Information Director Douge Vance, but Manning has not been given an official release. Brown has not made an official announcement of the move. Manning played for several pro teams, including the Carolina Cougars where Brown coached. He also served as an assistant coach at North Carolina A&T in 1979 before working as a truck driver until Brown's offer. Manning's son, 6-foot-10 Danny Manning, is rated by many publications as one of the top five high school players in the country for his transfer to Lawrence High School, the defending state champs in Kansas Class 6A. The KU assistant coach position opened up this summer when Brown fired former KU All-American and NBA All-Pro Jo White. Nebraska to challenge Penn State in rematch By United Press International EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Although the game was played in September, Penn State's 27-24 victory over Nebraska last season helped the Nittany Lions win the national championship as much as their Sugar Bowl victory. Gill ran for 486 yards and four touchdowns and passed for 1,182 more yards and 11 touchdowns. Tonight's inaugural Kickoff Classic at Giants Stadium offers a rematch of the Sept. 25 game, perhaps the most exciting of the 1982 season. The nationally ele- tive team begins at 8 p.m. and pits the defending national champion against the top-ranked 1983 pre-season team. 7. 0-yards-a carry average. He said we never worried about quarterback, where either Doug Strang or Dan Lonergan will replace Todd Blackledge, the Kansas City Chiefs No.1 draft choice. He announced Sunday that Strang would start against Nebraska and Lonergan also play. The Nuttany Lions' quarterback Rozier gained 1,689 yards and scored 15 touchdowns in 1982, but perhaps his most impressive statistic was his Tailback Mike Rozier, quarterback Turner Gill, wingback iniring Fryar and guard Dean Steinkühler return to the field. "I think the offensive output yesterday might put us on the right track," Texas Manager Doug Rader said jokingly. "You don't see a knuckleball very often," said Kansas City second base Frank White. "You can' get a pattern off him and it is hard to be aggressive like you can against a slider or fastball. You have to wait and see what the ball is going to do." KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Texas Rangers' batting slump continued yesterday but they managed enough offense to beat the Kansas City Royals 1-0 and break a six game losing streak. The Rangers slipped in a run on just five hits to avoid being swept by Kansas City in a five-game series. Texas' average over the past 12 games is, 192. For Ranger pitcher Charlie Hough it was only the second run he has received over his last three starts. "FIVE THROW WELL of late but we just haven't been able to win," said Hough, who raised his record to 11-12 with his knuckleball. Sheridan had three of the Royals' seven hits off Hough, who walked two and struck out three. Royals' starter Steve Renko, 6-11, lasted five innings before leaving with a groin injury.
