August 26. 1983 Topeka seminar covers job-hunting techniques By KRISTA GREEN Staff Reporter At a time when jobs are hard to come by, knowing correct techniques for job reviews, applications and resumes is vital. Opoka job counselor said yesterday. To help Topekanls learn the right way to go about getting a job, Sue Nodolfe teaches Employ-ability workshops at the Topeka YWCA. "A tremendous amount of people don't know how to go about getting a job." Nodelf said, "So, we try to describe the necessary procedures." In the workshop, Nodof gives tips on how to conduct a successful job interview. "We discuss the total procedure from walking in the front door to the closing door, and we see that the door is very SHE SAID THAT prospective employees should not smoke before or during an interview, and they should not chew gum. Before shaking hands, they should casually wipe the sweat off their palms. A positive self-image is also important when interviewing for a job, Nodolf said. "It is vital to be self-confident, but people can only take so many rejections before it reflects on their self-image." We give them lots of little peel talks. To promote a better self-image, Nodolf teaches transactional analysis theory, which she said helped people get to know themselves better. THE WORKSHIP ALSO provides information on resources in the community to help the unemployed find jobs, she said. "These people are in dire straits — they have no money and no job," she said. "So we give tips on consumer awareness and on budget preparation." Nodol, who is a job counselor with Community Action, a Shawnee County social services program, started teaching the classes two months ago as a project in cooperation with the Employment Training Coalition in Topeka. The ETC, comprised of 12 community service agencies, meets monthly to discuss the needs of the community, including the unemployment situation. The ETC is named by a governor's special grant, which expires Sept. 30, Nodelfd say. She will teach two more classes, Sept. 6-9 and Sept. 26-30, before the grant arrives. The coalition is reapplying for the grant, but does not know whether it will receive the grant for the next fiscal year.
