Page 8 University Daily Kansan, August 26, 1983 Train has three accidents in 4 $ _{1/2} $ hours; one killed ROWLAND, N.C. — An Amtrak train bound from Miami to New York with 413 passengers aboard hit and killed a woman in Savannah, Ga., struck a pickup truck in South Carolina and dared in North Carolina yesterday after ramming a disabled tractor-trailer. By United Press International Officials said 20 passengers were injured, none seriously, in the derailment of the 18-car Silver Meteor. The other passengers continued the trip by bus. The Savannah woman who was struck and killed at 7:40 p.m. Wednesday was identified as Mamie Anderson, 57. Police said she had been fishing from the railroad trestle. As the train rounded the curve at about 80 mph, she started running along the track, only to be sucked under the wheels. The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the train next struck a pickup about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in Ridgeland, S.C. The truck stalled on the tracks and was abandoned by the driver, a patrol dispatcher said. Deputy Press Secretary Larry Speakes was asked to respond to a Los Angeles Times report that White House officials privately acknowledged it was likely that Democrats would recapture the Senate in light of Texas GOP Sen. John Tower's decision not to seek another term. another term.
