Answers Page 8 University Daily Kansan, April 15, 1983 Lawrence Aviation suspends flights Lawrence Aviation Inc. temporarily suspended its 12 commuter flights to Kansas City International Airport as of midnight last night, the general manager of the Lawrence Municipal Airport said yesterday. In addition, the company's owner, Gene Kletschka, sent his 14 employees a statement that they were unemployed, said Rex Hughes, the general manager. KLETSCHKA, WHO lives in Springfield, Mo., was unavailable for comment last night. Hughes said he was instructed by company attorneys not to comment on Hughes said, "I'm not too sure what they mean by 'temporary,'" he said. "My bread and butter is flying and I want to get back in the air as fast as possible." Dean Burkhead, the attorney representing Lawrence Avalation, was uninformed about her role. Everyone kind of knew it was coming. It was the way they told us that was a shock." McGonigle said that business had been picking up since the beginning of the year. "Suspending flights is a pretty common thing across the country with fixed base operators," he said. "The economy gets bad and they pull out." A fixed base operator is a private company that agrees to provide services to small or rural airports in exchange for the use of the runways and buildings, he said.
