University Daily Kansan Page 5 KU At Rice Tonight SMU Wednesday Unless the Kansas Jayhawkers manage an about-face from Saturday's humiliation by SMU, tonight's game with Rice Institute in Houston may well be the second half of a disastrous Texas invasion. The KU Sports Network will broadcast tonight's game at 8 p.m. Only three of Rice's six victims have been major opponents—Tulane, Oklahoma, and Louisiana State. The others were St. Marys, Abilene Christian and Lamar Tech. For the season, Rice has averaged 77.5 points a game against an average of only 50.8 for its opponents. Wide Winning Margin In comparison to Southern Methodist, Rice offers little relief to the Kansas outlook. The Owls boast a 6-foot 10-inch center in sophomore Temple Tucker, as well as an undefeated record through their first six games. Besides Tucker, the Owls have 6- 6-inch Joe Durrenbeer and 6-foot 3-inch Fred Woods for rebounding power, a department in which Kansas was woefully weak against SMU. KU holds an all-time edge against Rice, having won six and lost one. Last season, Kansas swept a two-game series, scoring a record 100 points in one of the victories. SMU Here Wednesday Kansas returns to the home boards Wednesday to meet Southern Methodist, easy conqueror of the Jayhawkers Saturday in Dallas. It will be the first game in Allen Field House since the season's opener over two weeks ago. Tipoff will be at 7:35 p.m. KU will have ample incentive in Wednesday's rematch with last year's Southwest Conference champion. Saturday, Jim Krebs and company ran roughshod over Kansas in handing it its first loss of the season. For Coach Phog Allen's men to get revenge, they must stop Krebs' scoring and get their share of rebounds against the taller Mustangs. We will try to offset the height disadvantage with a fast break. Big 7 Tourney To Start Dec.27 The first night of the tournament will see Colorado playing Oklahoma in the first game and Iowa State and Kansas State in the second game. Cornell will come to Kansas City with a 3-1 record. It defeated Buffalo. Colgate, and Brown, and lost to Harvard. One of the co-captains of the Ivy League Big Red team is Chuck Rolles, who stands only 5 feet, 6 inches, but who averaged 22.7 points through the first three games of this season. This will be the first appearance for Cornell in the tournament. Last season, it finished fifth in the Ivy League with a record of 10 victories and 13 losses. Try Kansan Want Ads. Get Results.
