Page 4 University Daily Kansan Monday, Dec. 19, 1955 Listless Kansas Falls To Southern Methodist Kansas' three-game victory streak came to a disheartening halt Saturday night as they were beaten by a steadier, more aggressive SMU team. 81 to 61 in Dallas. It was the Jayhawks' most listless display since their pre-season upset by the freshmen, and it served notice that considerable improvement is needed if KU expects to win. Inconsistent rebounding and cold shooting hurt the Jayhawks the most. But as expected, the Mustangs' two big out-of-staters, Jim Krebs of Webster Grove, Mo., and Joel Krog of Ashland, Ky., proved troublesome for KU. Krebs Hit 22 Center Lew Johnson's inability to cover Krebs allowed him to score 22 points, 16 of them coming on first-half hook shots and tin-ins. Although he scored but seven points, Krog grabbed 21 rebounds, and was equally instrumental in foiling close-in shots by KU. An additional nemesis for the Jayhawks was forward Larry Showalter, who kept the KU defense loose by scoring 20 points, most of them outside shots. KU not only was impotent in rebounding, gathering but 29 to SMU's 61, but had considerable trouble scoring, particularly in the last half, when the Ponies stretched their lead to 63 to 46. SMU hit 42.3 per cent of its shots against only 29 per cent for KU. King Plays Sharp Maurice King, junior guard, was KU's lone bright spot in an otherwise dismal effort, as he scored 18 points and played almost all of the game. Capt, Dallas Dobbs was second high scorer with 14 points. The closest margin during the game was early in the first half when Kansas trailed 6 to 9. KU did manage to inch up as close as 19 to 23, and in start of the second half they again crest close. 34 to 39. The Ponies iced the game when, with a little less than 10 minutes left, substitute Rick Herrscher scored three consecutive goals to run SMU's lead to 63 to 46. Two of these goals came on a fast break and a long shot. KANSAS SMU led at halftime, 39 to 30.
