Page 5 University Daily Kansan By KENT THOMAS Another Big Seven pre-season basketball tournament will unfold Dec. 27, and this year's series promises to be a good one. All the teams seem to be on an even keel. (Assistant Sports Editor Of The Daily Kansan) While the tourney is bound to hold the interest of area fans, it doesn't seem to stir up much national interest. In fact, one basketball magazine didn't even include the Big Seven tournament games in its list of the 350 key games for the season. Other Christmas tournaments, with participating teams like Hardin-Simmons, Evansville, College of Pacific, Kentucky Wesleyan, Westminster and Lafayette, were listed as key affairs. For a league which consistently has three or four teams that can stand up to the best competition in the country, the Big Seven certainly is not overrated. ** ** Turning to football a moment, word has arrived that Joe Carrier former KU footballer and now with the Army in France, is expected to return to school next year. Joe played end for the Jayhawkers in 1953 when a sophomore. He entered the service in 1954 and is due for discharge this summer. for discharge this summer. Carrier has been playing halfback in the service and apparently feels at home at the backfield position. In this season's opening game, Joe, a :09.7, 100-yard dash man, averaged nine yards per carry. *** Michigan's Ron Kramer is a real jack-of-all-trades. He was an all-American end in football this past season and last year was the leading scorer on the Wolverine basketball squad with a 16-point average. He's a track letterman, high jumping 6 feet 4 inches. The baseball and tennis coaches want him too. Victories Tough For Kentucky Bv UNITED PRESS The evidence continued to pile up today that the Kentucky basket- ball team may have been badly overrated. Temple Started It Loaded with height and high-scoring veterans, this was supposed to be one of the best teams turned out in recent years by Coach Adolph Rupp, the highly-successful "Baron of the Bluegrass." But a 62-61 victory over Maryland last night, saved only by a desperate "freeze," was the Wildcats' third poor showing within six nights. First, last Saturday, it was Temple that stunned the court world by whipping the Wildcats, 73-61, in the biggest upset this season. On Monday night, dePaul nearly did the same thing, losing, 71-69, only on Jerry Bird's basket for Kentucky with six seconds left. San Francisco, the nation's No. 1 team, opens its seven-game national tour tonight at Chicago, risking its 29-game winning streak against Marquette in the opening round of the DePaul tournament. Battle Of Centers It's the biggest test so far for the national champion Dons, for Marquette is ranked 13th nationally and has a top-notch 6-foot 8-inch center in Terry Rand who figures to stage a tough battle with all-America, 6-foot 10-inch Bill Russell. Duquesne, ranked No. 8 nationally meets DePaul in the other game, with tonight's winners clashing tomorrow. The Blue-Gray tournament at Montgomery, Ala., also a two-night affair, opens tonight with Texas facing Auburn and Eastern Kentucky playing Mississippi in first-round games. Utah and Dayton, getting set for their appearance in Kentucky next week, take on Idaho State and Cincinnati, respectively, in other top games tonight, while Brigham Young, ranked ninth nationally, hosts Colorado, the team that upset Iowa last Saturday, and UCLA ranked 20th, visits Nebraska. Zoo specimens have been observed going backward, the National Geographic Society says. Santee Casual On Inquiry NEW YORK (U.P.)—Wes Santee who proved he's in shape for top-notch competition by running the fastest flat-floor mile ever seen in this area, says he isn't worried by the AAU's new investigation of his amateur status. "Id be heartbroken if not allowed to run for the United States in the Olympics," said the Marine lieutenant last night after clocking 4:10.2 for the mile in a special handicap meet here. "But I'm not worried, because my conscience is clear." Santee said. "I never made demands on meet directors. I have always accepted expenses in good faith and made full reports on them." fun Republican. Santee was suspended once by the Missouri Valley AAU on charges he accepted too much expense money for competing in meets in California last summer. The suspension was lifted a short time later by the same group's board of directors. But the National AAU convention in Louisville, Ky., voted on Dec. 4 to investigate the case again. Last night's race was Santee's first since the new investigation began. Intramural basketball rolled along yesterday with 14 games being played in Fraternity and Independent B and C divisions. The closest game of the day was the victory of the Chicken Pickers scored over Jim Beam 35 to 32. The New York Athletic Commission amended its rules to outlaw the boxing guild of that state. A crowd of 7,200 watched the Wildcats open up a 10-3 lead and Pull away to a 43-29 intermission lead. The loss was Loyola's second straight on the road after two home wins.
