Page 12 University Daily Kansan Thursday, Dec. 15, 1955 He's In Charge Of Plant And Construction Plans A graduate of the University's School of Business, who showed his capabilities as an administrator while still in college as an executive of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, today is in charge of all physical plant operations on the campus. Keith Lawton, who was appointed administrative assistant to the chancellor in 1951 after serving as director of dormitories from 1948 to that year, is the man who is responsible for the condition and construction of the buildings that dot the campus. Mr. Lawton describes his job as co-ordinator for all construction and repairs necessary to expand the University. The current building boom on the campus includes such constructions as the Allen Field House, Malett Hall, and the fine arts building which is now under construction. The first phase of his job includes seeing that contracts are carried out within the specified time. The second phase is always going on, he said. That is remodeling present buildings. This is done either by private contractors or by the department of building and grounds. The aim of Mr. Lawton's job is to co-ordinate new building activity with general repair work done by the building and grounds department. The construction jobs now include the remodeling of Bailey Hall expected to be completed next semester and landscaping of the area near Malott Hall. The fine arts building should be completed by fall of 1957. Future projects include the remodeling of Blake Hall, construction of a School of Business building, and additions to the engineering buildings and Watson Library. Mr. Gaitskell, 49, stunchily pro-American rightwinger, succeeded to the post vacated last week by Clement R. Attlee. The one sour note amid the almost unanimous acclaim for his victory was struck by Lord Amwell. He announced: "I am...withdrawing my name from the party." Indian languages will have disappeared from Kansas within 50 years, two faculty members who are studying the subject have predicted. J. Neale Carman, professor of romance languages, and Karl S. Pond, assistant instructor of romance languages, said only three or four Indians know the language of the Sac and Fox tribe of Reserve, Kan., and Falls City, Neb. Others in the tribe are using Pottawatomie. Wolfson's HERB YOUR CREDIT IS GOOD* Mr. Pond said he met a young Kickapoo at Horton who could understand his father in Kickapoo but had to answer him in English. Dr. Carman said the economic stresses from the world wars caused the situation. Ph VI 3-4366 "The post-World War I prosperity created attractive jobs which lured the younger Indians off the reservations," he said. "As members of their new communities they attempted to identify themselves with their white neighbors, and one means of doing this was to use English like everyone else." Columbus' voyages to the New World were in 1492, 1493 and 1494 (same voyage), 1498 and 1502. "Hard times of the 1930's forced Indians back onto their reservations, but when they came back they spoke English, not Indian," he said. "When they taught it to other Indians, the native languages were forced into growing disuse. Then World War II brought more prosperity, jobs, another migration, and more English-speaking Indians. Now only the older members of the tribes continue to use the native tongues." Nite-Aires® LEISURE LOVELIES 837 Mass Royal College Shop SHOP PENNEY'S FOR GIFTS . . .
