Gene Elstun Plays Well-Balanced Game "You tell them I'm going to start in the Northwestern game," junior forward Gene Elstun relayed on to Coach Phog Allen from his sick bed a few days preceding the opening game against Northwestern. And start he did. He sparked the Jayhawkers to a 91-70 win over the Big Ten Conference team with a 19-point performance. Besides taking scoring honors, Gene was an inspiration to his teammates during the contest. One of the starters from last year's team, Elstun provides the Kansas team with a well - balanced brand of basketball. He was second high last year in both scoring and rebounding, and although not fully recovered from the virus infection he suffered during the Thanksgiving vacation he should better last year's record. He scored 299 points last year for a 14.2 average a game and gathered in 186 rebounds. The 6-foot, 3-inch former Shawnee Mission High School star is a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and is a pre-law student. In high school he earned three letters in both basketball and golf. In his junior year Shawnee Mission was beaten in the state finals by one point, but came back to win the state championship the next year. Gene is a top-notch golfer and has won several tournaments. Elstun thinks the team is looking pretty good so far, but says it will have to play better ball to beat SMU and Rice this week end. He thinks the Big Seven Conference race should be well balanced this year and if KU works hard and shows improvement as the season progresses, it should fare better than last year's fifth-place team. AUTO PARTS AND TIRES New or Used AUTO WRECKING and JUNK CO. East End of Ninth St. NORMAN, Okla. (U.P.)—Coach Bud Wilkinson fears Maryland will be the toughest team his national champion. Sooners have faced in the eight years he has been coaching at Oklahoma. Bud's Crying Wolf Again Wilkinson, noted for his pregame pessimism, warned Sooner fans not to be "too high on our chances" in the Jan. 2 Orange Bowl match at Miami. "We feel we face the most difficult assignment we have ever had." Wilkinson said. "At Miami, the position of the two teams will be exactly reversed from what it was two years ago." "Maryland will have all the underdog psychology on her side. "Before the season began, Coach Jim Tatum said publicly he expected this to be his greatest team. Their play throughout the year has made him an accurate prophet. We are going to do the best we can, but we hope the Oklahoma people won't be too high on our chances." Wilkinson referred to the 1954 Orange Bowl match when Oklahome, rated No. 4, defeated national champion Maryland, 7-0. Oklahoma is ranked No. 1, Maryland. No. 3, this year. The Sooners worked out in pads yesterday for the first time since the close of regular season play. The squad concentrated on pass defense and offense and timing of backfield plays. Iharos Cracks 2-Mile Mark Sandor Iharos, of Hungary broke the Australian two-mile record in a race at Melbourne, Australia Wednesday. Iharos defeated country-man Laszlo Tabori by less than six inches. In three games in last year's Big Seven pre-season tournament, champion Missouri made 91 free throws. KU Prepares For Tall Men The Jayhawks put their perfect record in jeopardy this weekend as they journey to Dallas to play a strong Southern Methodist team. The Mustangs, defending champions of the Southwest Conference, have one of the finest centers in the country in 6-foot, 8-inch Jim Krebs. The talented Krebs is expected to give Kansas their first real test under the backboards. The Jayhawks, in winning their first three games, have at times exhibited a balanced and smooth-running offense which could take them a long way this year. Whether or not they will be able to hold their own against the big teams may be determined in the game with the taller and well-balanced Mustangs. Face Two Tall Men Coach Allen drilled the squad this week on defense against the big man, Krebs and Rice's 6-foot, 11-inch Temple Tucker are two of the tallest men KU will face this season. Kansas plays Rice at Houston Monday night. On offense Dr. Allen has placed an emphasis on the press with particular stress on the fast break which was so successful against Wisconsin, especially during the first half. An unusual feature of the KU offense this year is the rotating nivot. Any man on the team can play the post position at any given time. Elstun, Brainard, King and Johnson usually alternate at the keyhole with Dobbs, who engineers the offense, playing on the outside. Elstun operates particularly well against taller centers who are weak defensively. Team Strength: Captain Dallas Dobbs, who had trouble locating the basket in his first two outings, scored brilliantly against Wisconsin and seems to have regained his shooting effectiveness. Bill Brainard is fully recovered from the flu and is ready for full time duty. KU appears to be at full strength for SMU but the Jayhawks, who have been alternately hot and cold thus far, must play 40 minutes of basketball against the Mustangs. Kluszewski Leads League In Fielding University Daily Kansan NEW YORK (U.P.)-Ted Kluszewski is no "Fancy Dan" but his sharpest critics must admit he gets the job done. Page 7 National League statistics show that the Cincinnati Redlegs 235-pound slugger set a major league record by leading the circuit's first baseman in fielding for the fifth consecutive season. Sauer To Stay At Baylor George Sauer, athletic director at Baylor, said Wednesday he knew nothing about reports that he was under consideration for the head coaching job at Wake Forest. Sauer said he had "not been contacted" about the job. Santee Will Run In Handicap Tonight NEW YORK (U.P.)—Wes Santee, America's premier miler, will be shooting for the fastest mile clocking ever posted on a flat indoor track tonight when he competes in the Metropolitan AAU Handicap track meet. Santee's target is the 4:90.1 posted by Don Gehrmann of Wisconsin in 1351. However, should Santee better that figure, it would not be recognized as a record because tonight's race will be a handicap affair. Chuck Duncan, Iowa State center last year, led the 1954 Big Seven pre-season basketball tournament in scoring with 75 points, an average of 25 a game.
