Page 10 University Daily Kansan Wednesday, Dec. 14, 1952 Geologist To Tell Of Amazon Trip The Geology Club will take a trip "Down the Amazon" Thursday night when they hear a lecture on the Amazon Basin by Walter Youngquist, professor of geology. The lecture will be at 7:30 p.m. in 426 Lindley. Prof. Youngguist worked for an oil company in Peru. When he learned he was coming to the University he decided to take a trip through the Amazon Basin to take pictures of one of the greatest geology spots in the world. Taking only a few personal bellongings, he started hitch-hiking. He climbed over the Andes mountains, traveled down the Amazon River, and then hitch-hiked overland to Trinidad. From there he came to the States. Prof. Youngquist said the trip took him 30 days. He rode on river boats and stayed in the homes of natives. The people he met on the trip asked him many questions about life in the United States, he said. Prof. Youngquist took over 400 pictures on his trip. He will show many of these at his lecture. The public is invited. Soil compaction resulting from traffic by heavy equipment or livestock can indirectly limit the emergence of wheat seedlings on great plains soils. 7 Kappa Sigs Win Awards Seven members of the KU chapter of Kappa Sigma social fraternity received awards presented by the national fraternity at a banquet celebrating the 86th anniversary of its founding in Kansas City, Mo., Saturday. Jack Abercrombie, Beloit senior, received a $300 award based on his leadership and scholarship during his three years of college. This is part of the annual $20,100 scholarship program set up by the fraternity. Others to receive awards were Michael Gibson, Hutchinson sophomore; Jerry Kindig, Kansas City, Mo., senior; William Buck, Kansas City, Kas., Noel Rooney, Dodge City senior; William Martin, Eskridge senior, and William Woods, Arkansas City senior. Highlight of the banquet was the presentation of the Kappa Sigma's Man of the Year award to Arnold Johnson, president of the Kansas City Athletics and former Kappa Sig from the University of Chicago. Poetry Club To Hear Christmas Carols Mrs. John H. Nelson, wife of the dean of the Graduate Schol, will sing Christmas carols at 4 p.m. tomorrow for the Poetry Hour program in the Student Union. Mrs. Nelson, who will be ac-companied on the organ by Paul Little, research associate, will sing lesser known Christmas carols. She will also lead group singing. Arnold Air Society Sees Film Morsch Elected Co-ops' President Dale Morsch, Lawrence junior, has been elected president of the Central League of Campus Co-ops. Stanley Myers, Medicine Lodge junior, has been elected to the League's board of directors. Morsch and Wayne Teff, Saffordville senior, have been named as delegates to the national convention of campus co-ops to be held in Chicago Dec. 29-30. YM-YWCA To Carol Monday Canterbury House, which has had its new location at 1341 West Campus Road since last June, provides a collegiate center for students and faculty of the University. It is maintained by Canterbury Association, the Episcopal college student organization. Episcopalians Have Center Canterbury House is not just a recreational center, but also a Episcopal Church of the University of Kansas. It is used for study session groups, as a general program center, and for the Sunday night faculty-student buffet. In addition to the living quarters of the chaplain, Rev. Andy Berry, there is a recreation area with provisions for reading and listening to the radio or television. The WVCA and VMCA will have a caroling party at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Carolers will meet at the Student Union and go first on Jayhawk avenue to the chancellor's home. After caroling the party will return on Memorial Drive to the Union, where hot chocolate and cookies will be served. Members of Arnold Air Society, honorary air force ROTC society, viewed a film entitled "The Air Force Digest" last night at the Military Science building.
