The fish weren't biting but Harold Marsh came home with a good catch anyway. He hooked a wallet that had been dropped into Lake Pocapotau by Mrs. Joanne Riddle three months earlier. She gave him $5 for returning the wallet and the $30 in it. Many students have been wondering why the Jayhawk mascot has not been present at home basketball games. It's Too Hot For Jayhawk The Jayhawk is old and heavy, Donald Smith, Eureka junior, and president of the Ku Ku's expained. The bird is uncomfortable indoors, he said. The Jayhawk probably is on its last legs and a new one will be needed for next year, he added. The Jayhawk will be at the conference home games, James Miller, Madison senior, said. But he is too big and gets in the way of spectators and he has no place to stand, Miller said. The Jayhawk can't go onto the basketball court with his present leather cowboy boots because the leather heels will mar the finish of the new floor, cheerleader Vince Bilotta, East Orange, N. J. junior. said. Miller said that the Jayhawk was supposed to go to Wisconsin to be on television last Saturday, but a box large enough to crate the bird could not be found. Using a portable influenza vaccineing unit proved successful yesterday as 181 students were given shots at the station set up in Strong. The unit is at Marvin today until 4:45 p.m. The movable unit is being used in an effort to reach as many students as possible before the Christmas vacation. It will be set up in Lindley Thursday and at Malott Hall on Friday. 181 Get Flu Shots Vaccination at Watkins Hospital fell off, however, as only 36 persons received shots there yesterday. The Student Religious Council will hold a short business meeting at 5 p.m. today at the Wesley Foundation. Following the meeting there will be an informal get-together. Refreshments will be served. The 217 vaccinated yesterday brought the year's total to 1,509. SRC To Meet At 5 Today The enlistment of Negroes as U.S. soldiers was authorized by President Lincoln Aug. 25, 1862. A person who probably sees as much of the campus day after day as anyone is Mrs. Josie L. McGhee. She is the campus mail clerk. Come Rain Or Come Shine Mrs. McGhee Delivers Mail MRS. JOSIE L. McGHEE Mrs. McGhee, whose well-known face and friendliness have made her a popular campus personality, is handling campus mail for the twelfth year. Originally, it was a man's job but in 1943 when Her work is designed for a person who does like to walk. She walks daily from building to building, picking up mail and distributing it to the various schools and departments. Often, here was a manpower shortage. Mrs. McGhee volunteered for the job and has been there since. mail is so plentiful that it has to be taken to her miniature office in the east basement of Strong Hall and sorted before further delivery. While she handled the campus mail by herself for many years, expansion of the University has made it necessary for her to have part-time helpers. Her student-assistants are Daryl Conger, Ottawa junior, and Karlheinz Zangerle, graduate student from Loeschwege, Germany, both of whom seh regards highly. "There's a lot of work to it, but we enjoy the people we work with so much, that it's real pleasant. The cooperation is splendid," she said. highly. Memory plays a significant part in the work of Mrs. McGhee and her helpers. While modern mail boxes in some of the buildings prove helpful, there are many teachers and administrators whose names and offices must be memorized to insure proper delivery. Conger, who has helped her for two, ygars, said of Mrs. McGhee: "I've never anyone so conscientious in my life. They'd have to have two full-time persons to replace her." Mrs. McGhee is a civil service employee and is under the supervision of Buildings and Grounds. She moved to Lawrence 31 years ago from her home town of Purdin, Mo.
