Page 7 Ruling Will Hit 2 K-Staters MANHATTAN (U.P.)- Pachin Vicens and Fritz Schneider, starting guards on the Kansas State College basketball team, will not be eligible for competition in their senior year next season because of freshman play at Marquette University. Both transferred from Marquette in 1953 as sophomores. Big Seven faculty representatives meeting in Kansas City last Friday ruled that freshman competition at Marquette counted as a year of eligibility, it was announced last night. Kansas State Basketball Coach Tex Winter said the 1952-53 Marquette freshman schedule included nine games against freshman teams and industrial league teams in Milwaukee. Big Seven rules specify that one year of participation on a freshman team after Sept. 1, 1953 shall not count. But the two participated before the date set forth and lose a year of varsity competition. Winter had said he felt the rules "were penalizing the boy who happened to enroll as a freshman in a non-member institution in the single year, 1952" the single year, Vicens was second-high scorer with the Wildcats last season, averaging 10.8 points per game. Frisco Dons Move East Power-packed Duquesne and Marquette, posting impressive victories that boosted their perfect records to 4-0, prepared today for a shot at national basketball champion San Francisco. Rv UNITED PRESS Duquesne, winner of last week's Steel Bowl tournament and led by all-American Sihugo Green, displayed its defensive power last night in holding down St. Francis of Pennsylvania, 63-48, at Pittsburgh. Marquette, though forced to play without Terry Rand, its high-scooring 6-9 center, for most of the game, downed Miami of Ohio, 71-65. at Milwaukee. Marquette, ranked 13th nationally, is matched against San Francisco in the opening round of the De Paul Tournament at Chicago Stadium Friday night. Duquesne, ranked No. 8, faces De Paul in the first round and is favored to reach the final round Saturday against the Marquette-San Francisco winner. Southern Methodist is the only guest team ever to win the Big Seven pre-season basketball tournament. The Mustangs won in 1946, the first year of the tourney. Fast Break Is Stressed The undefeated KU varsity underwent another tough practice in preparation for its games with SMU Saturday at Dallas and with Rice Monday night at Houston. Kansas State has won the Big Seven pre-season basketball tournament three times, Missouri and Kansas two each, Oklahoma once, and Southern Methodist once. Coach Phog Allen sent this squad through offensive and defensive drills that would be used in the games this week end. Work on the fast break was also stressed by the Kansas coach. Dick Harp, assistant basketball coach, was doubtful about the outcome of the two ball games with the Southwest Conference teams. Worrying Coach Harp was the height and well-balanced teams that both opponent schools have. A comparison that can be made concerning the game with SMU is the outcome of both schools against Wisconsin. Kansas defeated the Badgers 74-66; SMU beat them 75-62. The widest winning margin scored in the Big Seven pre-season basketball tournament was by Colorado last year when it defeated Nebraska, 89 to 47. In the 1948 Big Seven pre-season basketball tournament, Bob Peterson of Iowa State connected on every one of his 16 free throw attempts.
