Dallas Dobbs Is Top Scoring Guard The highest scoring guard in Kansas history—that's team captain Dallas Dobbs, 5-foot 11-inch senior from Bartlesville, Okla. Dobbs, better known as "Woody" by his teammates, is a starter on the varsity basketball team for the third year. Dobbs twice has been selected on the all-Big Seven team. However Coach Phog Allen says he is playing a greatly-improved game this year, both offensively and defensively. "He has come into his own as a leader this year." Coach Allen said. "Always a fine floor man and excellent shot, his leadership and fine defensive play have keynoted his performances so far this year." Dobbs has DOUBTS scored 42 points in the games the season, an average of 16 game. His 26 points against Wisconsin sparked KU's 74 to 65 victory. Dallas thinks Kansas has a good chance to win the conference championship this year. "Missouri, after beating Illinois, must be regarded as one of the country's top teams. Colorado should also have a fine team this year, but with normal improvement, we should give them a battle," he said. The Bartlesville senior called Wisconsin a good team. "They were thrown of balance by our fast break during the first half, but came back strong the second half." Dobbs had a brilliant high school career at Bartlesville. He was selected all-state in both basketball and football, and also was a pitcher on the baseball squad. He received mention on the all-American basketball team as a senior. To show his versatility, Dobbs bagged the intramural golf championship last spring. In addition to his sports prowess, he also plays the piano. Dallas is a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Being a member of Air Force ROTC, he is slated to serve two years on active duty after graduation next spring. He is interested in a professional basketball career after his military service. Aggie On Olympic Staff Ralph Higgins, Oklahoma A&M college track coach for 20 years, became the fifth A&M man to be assigned to a U.S. Olympic staff position with his appointment recently to the 1956 American track and field managerial staff. Jack Froistad of Colorado fouled out in 43 seconds in a game against Iowa State in the Big Seven preseason basketball tournament in 1950. "My Gosh," shrieked Joe Smith As he started to dart, "With that worn-out battery My car'll never start!" "A grease job I've neglected," Another chimed in, "The way that car squeaks, You'd think it was made out of tin!" The brothers assembled, Their plight was the same— Though their bags were all packed, Not a safe car could they claim. And as they sat worrying, Alack and alas, Up drove Mr. Leonard With his Personalized Gas! "Ho,ho," he chuckled, As they sprang from their chairs, "Here's chains for your tires, And free air for those spares." "A car that's not serviced Your vacation, could spoil." He laughed, as he sold them gas Batteries and quarts of oil. The students all cheered, As he climbed back in his cab, Yet wondered, as students oft do "Why must I have that 5 o'clock lab?" —paid "Grease jobs and such— with t h a t Yuletide touch!"
