University Daily Kansan Tuesday, Dec. 13, 1955. St. Louis Coach Says Phog Is A Hypocrite By UNITED PRESS NEW YORK—Wilt Chamberlain, the seven-foot, Philadelphia high school star who went to Kansas University, is the central figure today in still another basketball controversy. Coach Ed Hickey of St. Louis University started it when he accused Coach Phog Allen of Kansas of "hypocrisy" in recruiting Chamberlain from Overbrook High School in Philadelphia. Coach Allen retorted that he "would not care to dignify Coach Hickey's remarks—people here are fully acquainted with his tactics." Drafted By Warriors Chamberlain, who weighed more than 100 offers before going to Kansas, was the subject of a controversy in the National Basketball Association only a couple of weeks ago when it became known that the Philadelphia Warriors already has secured draft rights to him. Coach Hickey, in a tape-recorded interview made for the Armed Forces Radio Service and played back to yesterday's meeting of the New York Basketball Writers Association, was especially incensed because St. Louis is currently under NCAA probation for allegedly recruiting "a boy from across the state in Missouri." "I don't know what would have happened if we'd had a boy who travelled as far as Philadelphia to Lawrence, and I'm sure Chamberlain doesn't have asthma," Coach Hickey said. Clyde Lovelle, currently starring with the Minneapolis Lakers of the NBA, allegedly went from Terre Haute, Ind., to Kansas to help combat asthma. Wilt Played At Resorts He also recalled that Chamberlain played basketball at Catskill Mountain resorts during the summer—a practice Dr. Allen once denounced as the root of the college fix scandals. "I can recall the coach for whom Chamberlain now intends to play having gone on record publicly and nationally in magazines criticizing basketball play in the Catskill Mountains," he said. "It seems now there's come home to roost one of the boys from the Catskills he plans to capitalize on. "It's hard for us to understand these situations," he continued. "It definitely spells some amount of hypocrisy as far as control regulations are concerned." K.C. A's Sign Pitcher KANASS CITY, Mo. —(U.P.)— Charles J. Kowalski, 17-year-old left-handed pitcher from Chicago has been signed by the Kansas City Athletics. Kowalski, who hurled two no-hitters in high school, will report to the A's Columbus, Ohio farm club next spring.
