Page 5 By DICK WALT (Assistant Managing Editor of The Daily Kansan) Students in all Big Seven conference schools should be happy that the conference is located north of the Mason-Dixon line. In the past 10 days, students at both Georgia Tech and Jones Junior College of Collins, Miss., have been literally insulted by older, and allegedly wiser, people. These interested parties have sought to protest because the two schools involved are participating in postseason football bowl games against teams which have Negro players in the lineups. Tech will meet Pittsburgh in the Sugar Bowl and Jones Juco faced Compton, Calif., Juco in the Junior Rose Bowl Saturday in Pasadena, Calif. The situation arose when Gov. Marvin Griffin of Georgia asked the Georgia Board of Regents to prevent Tech from participating in the Sugar Bowl. The Board of Regents would not break the commitment, but did adopt a compromise proposal which may make it difficult for Georgia teams to participate in bowl games in the future. Students at four Georgia schools—Tech, Mercer University, the University of Georgia, and Emory University—revoltite again against action. Students all are in schools, enlisting the offices of Gov Griffin, and the Tech students marched on the state capitol and governor's mansion for a demonstration. The situation at Jones Juco was slightly different. Permission was granted for the team to make the trip, but the Covington County Board of Supervisors withdrew a $250 donation which it had previously offered to help finance a band trip to the game. The reason? Compton Juco had a number of Negro players on its squad. The board drew up and adopted a resolution which stated that it "had no desire to contribute to the integration of the races, either socially or educationally." Perhaps Gov. Griffin and the Covington County Board of Supervisors feel they are acting for the best interests of the state. However, we feel that they are doing their respective states irreparable damage by their actions. Georgia Tech is nationally known as a football power, and is almost a traditional bowl-game participant. With such continued action by the administrators, such a tradition may be wiped out, and as far as we can see, that's the way it should be. If the schools of the south want to remain isolated from the rest of the world, let 'em. No Twins Mrs.Mantle COMMERCE, Okla. (U.P.)—Mickey Mantle, whose wife has been expecting a baby since Dec. 1, is sure of only one thing—it won't be twins. Mantle rushed back from a tour of Japan with the New York Yankees when his wife was reported ill. In his home at Commerce yesterday, Mickey said his wife is feeling well and they expect the baby to arrive at any time. When Mantle returned from Japan to Joplin, Mo., where the Mantles have reserved hospital space, doctors indicated Mrs. Mantle might have twins. Now, however, they said Mrs. Mantle will have only one child. Mantle said the leg he injured last season is back in shape and he is ready to play baseball in the spring. However, if this is merely the decision of the higher-ups, and does not represent student opinion, then the administrators are at fault. College football is for the students. (At least that's what people claim.) If the students want to play, more power to them. If not, they, and not the governor or Board of Regents, should be permitted to decline the opportunity.
