Dec. 12, 1955 Dobbs Hits 26 As KU Dumps Badgers,74-66 A sparse crowd of 4,000 fans and a national television audience watched the Kansas Jayhawks race to a 35-19 halftime lead, and then hold off several second half comeback attempts by Wisconsin to score a 74-66 win at Madison Saturday. Jayhawkker Captain Dallas Dobbs was the game's high scorer with 26 points and was a menace to the Badgers all afternoon. He combined driving layups and an 80 per cent shooting average from the foul line with his favorite jump shot to help Kansas to its 16-point halftime lead. In the second half, his scoring helped keep the Badgers from pulling any closer than six points. Dick Miller, Wisconsin's high scorer, hit 24 points. He tallied 15 after intermission. The game began with Kansas taking a 5-0 lead only to have Coach Bud Fisher's charges tie the count at 8-8. The lead then changed possession four times before Kansas pulled in front, 12-11. KU Led 33-11 The game then turned into a rout. The Badgers couldn't hit a field goal or foul shot in the minutes that followed and Kansas rolled to a 33-11 lead. The gap was closed 35-19 at the half. As the second half began, Wisconsin hit seven straight points and narrowed the margin to 35-26 before Kansas found the range. KU took a 15-point lead but the fighting Wisconsin five rallied once again and the score stood at 51-45. Center Lew Johnson added six quick points to the Jayhawkers score, but with a minute and a half remaining, the Badgers made their last comeback attempt and again came within six points, 71-65. Folz Played Well Both teams had a 37 per cent shooting average from the floor but Wisconsin could manage only 52 per cent of their foul shots compared to 77 per cent for Kansas. **Fouli Played** A big surprise for Wisconsin was the fine play of substitute center Dan Folz. In the Badgers' previous games with Butler and Notre Dame, he scored but one point. Saturday, he shot four times and scored each time for an eight point total. Gene Elstun and Lew Johnson followed Dobbs in Kansas scoring with 14 points each. Both did a fine rebounding job along with Maurice King. Johnson held Wisconsin's starting center, John Parker, to one point. Kansas' next opponent will be SMU Saturday at Dallas. Last Saturday the Mustangs edged Minnesota, 82-21, in an overtime thriller. The veteran from White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., seemed destined to win the Miami Open for the sixth time as he beat Tommy Bolt on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff in a finish that left the gallery gasping. Snead played the last nine holes of the final round in 29 strokes, a new record for the tricky Miami course, to tie Bolt at the finish with a 201 total for 54 holes. No other golfer has won a major PGA tournament six times but Snead plays the Miami area courses like he owns them. Minnesota has the largest collegiate field house in the country.
